182 oil

  Ford Fiesta

what does everyone recommend then? is Mobil 1 suited is GTX Magnetec suited, and if both are which is best? or what about the Elf supplied from up here in yorkshire its what renault reccomend but is the fully synthetic any good?

If your not on a high milage yet i would continue to run a mineral 10w40 until you reach 2-3k. After that swap to Elf competition 10w40 or 15w50 in summer, its a semi and lovely stuff.

After a few more miles swap to fully synth, any 5w40 or 5w50 from a decent manufacturer is fine, but i dont like mobil 1s products that are on offer here in the UK, and magnatec is orrid.

i always thought fully synthectic is best, full stop. I dont really want to be using diffeent oils in summer and winter.

Elf competition it is then, 10w40 they state in the handbook I think. But its a semi would an Elf fully synthetic be better, not bothered about the cost.

Why is magnetec so bad, just from experience?

Just because its marketing ploy about b****cks magnetic oil clinging to metal. ALL ester based oils cling to metal due to the polar nature of the basestock.

And fulyl synth IS better unless your running in your car, using fully synth from the 1st mile will see you burning more oil, glazing the bores and making less power. Run a mineral up to 3000 miles ideally, changing at 100, 600, 2000 and 3000 if your really concerned in running it in properly. Then swap to a semi or fully synth.

But running a semi or fully synth doesnt make any real diff if they are both new oils, fully synth as far as most are concerned are just better for longer drain times.

And swapping oils for summer and winter use IS a good idea, engines do heatup faster and thin out faster and easier in summer as not only is it hotter but your more likely to rag it. In the winter you want a thinner base that will provide max protection.
