182 RPM @ 70 mph

Hi,

Does anybody know what RPM the 182 will do at a typical 70 mph in 5th gear. I was reading about the 206 GTI 180 being slated because it did 3500 rpm at 70mph!!

Cheers

You lads think you have it bad. Try motoring over here. Damn thing is over 6000 all the time in 5th!

Id rather have that than some pussy overdrive though. It is a well matched ratio considering the limited power.

its a hot hatch though not a cruiser, always found mine happy to sit on the motoroway when need be, but thats not what i bought it for.

182 owners -

How does the 182 stand in terms of engine reliability. Im trying to establish any abnormal engine noise during tick over, accelerating etc. I currently own a ZR 160 and want to get away from that silly rattling K Series VVC engine!!

Cheers.

mine sounds fine on tick over, but when i floor it it makes a strange noise as if a seal has gone. only hear it when i put the pedal right down.

but to be honest i didnt bother drivin slowly to let the engine bed in when i first got it!, when u got a car like the 182 u find it impossible to wanna drive it slowly, until u get sick of goin to petrol station all the time!, still get between 30 - 35 mpg tho.

best thing about the engine is the boost u get when ya hit 5200 rpm. its quick anyway but hit 5200 and it takes off!! Think it must be to do wit the variable valve timing or summit?!

The engine is probably the best thing about the 172/182 in my opinion. When you do floor it, it drowns out the interior rattles and there certainly aint any complaints from thr engine. Tick over can be a bit lumpy but nothing unusual. Excelleration is smooth note all the way through the revs, turns into a wild engine after 4.5k.

Cheers,

Any more comments/thoughts would be much appreciated.
Its just that im trying to decide over the 206 GTI 180 or the Clio 182. Both test drives went very well which makes it even harder! Looks like ill end up tossing a coin!

the interiors not started to rattle YET in mine, but when i proudly showed off my car to me dad the other week he pointed out that a lot of the buttons and switches in my 182 were identical to the ones in his renault truck!!

Had a W 206 Gti (140).... it RATTLED BIG TIME (after covering about 65000 miles)...
My new 182s covered 10.5k so far, and does rattle a tiny wee bit.

Been in a W 172 thats covered 50k, and it was fine... but prices have dropped since then. Maybe cheaper production methods mean cheaper car, and less quality? Who knows?

As for engine noise... the Gti IS the noisier car, despite the 182s new zorst system.

And miscellaneous... Well, my Gtis spoiler came off in a car wash, after only having it a week... shouldnt have happened really... so beware!

Also, difficult to judge where the wheels are on the Gti... my wheels got seriously scuffed! No damage to my 182 so far...

my cup seems pretty much fine. Build quality is absolutely sh*t but look at the number of people on here we all forgive our clios as they make us smile. I always laugh when i shut the boot or open the door. The engine is a proper tool its not all the powerfull but it does the job and handling on my cup is spot on. The car wasnt built for motorway cruising in mind your after the wrong car if thats all you do. It does cope well though 3500 rpm aint to badits only when you get to 130mph that you get a bit sick of the noise. Although ive only bothered doing it once as after i did it it didnt even make me grin. Handling is what the renault sport range is about and as far as im concerned none of the competition does it better (but i would say that wouldnt i)

personally I dont think there is any comparison between the two, the GTi 180 may look nic eon the outside but thats where it ends, the 182 is better specced, cheaper and faster and better handling, need I go on........

Oh and if you can find one review that has put the GTI180 ahead of the 182, I will eat my seats!

182 is an amazing car, all you have to do is watch top gear from last week and see it performing on the track to see its potential!

I suppose its all down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Reviews ive read say that the 206 GTI 180 has a fine engine! The seats are great too! Clarkson gave the GTI 180 a good review on Timesonline.

I suppose as i do mostly motorway driving to work i need a car that is not too noisey but also rapid for town/street driving!

my 1.4 does 58mph at 3,000rpm in 5th gear!

looked at my dads bm, and it does 87mph at 3000rpm in the automatic 5th gear. *not sure if thats the same think as a manual 5th gear?

you put a new car through a car wash?

PartyBoy -

Do you have all the cup bits on your 182?

Would this affect anything in terms of the cars performance, excluding handling?

no cup bits on it

but that shouldnt make any differance anyway mate

jus noticed my silver insert on my side bumpers is loose, hope cliomk2s not tried to nick them to stick onto his 1.5 dci;)

nice thing is your sat right on cam when your cruising at 80 so it pulls nicely when you put your foot down

My 182 at 3500 rpm goes at 74 (according to the Cruise control display) I take it thats better? It certainly is around that mark on the analogue display.

Any ideas\views?

Somethings wrong there no way any 182 shoudl be geared any differently.

Sounds like one of your dials is faulty.

All 182 will do the same speed at a set RPM in a gear (assuming they have the same tyres fitted)

They all have slightly different gearing to one another, expect the mk2 172 & Cup, which share the same box.

Thats pretty much spot on actually...

182 = 20.6mph per 1000rpm, so at 3500rpm its 72.1mph and close enough, especially seeing as there is speedo error to account for.
