182 'STOP' and 'OIL' lights on !!!

  Peddled device
This morning I was driving the car and with the engine at only half normal temperature the stop light and oil light came on...and then went off...and on again...about four times. When I stopped I checked the oil after about 1 hour and the level was fine. They did not come on again going home.

Help ! What do you think happened ?

whats the oil look like? how olds the oil? last sevice?

could be oil pressure!!

Dave, mine did this to both my Clios, and both engines seized! 172 did it the other day and it lost oil pressure and the engine cut out and never started again. I'd stongly advise getting it checked out.

Oil looks good...like new. Its only done around 6k since the last service last October. It's going into NW Performance this weekend for a 12k service.

:( Sh1t !!!

My car hasn't missed a beat in 4 1/2 years...first sign of any trouble !

Is there anything I can check myself before it goes to NWP ?

I wouldn't have a clue mate, I'd definitely mention it though and say you want it properly looking into.

Just reading other post on here about this same problem...seems to be the oil pressure switch was at fault nearly every time,so an easy fix at around £20 if it's that. But I do have a slight weep of oil from the small nuts on top of the inlet manifold, but it's so very small and because of this I check the oil level around twice a week (I do around 175 miles a week) and the level is still high (a couple of mm from the top level).

I think i'll email NWP and ask them to get a pressure switch in and change it on Saturday,as well as asking them to check out the oil pump,to be on the safe side.

Okay, thanks. I had the car for 3 years with the original pads and discs and these were changed last year so I think they'll be fine.

All fluid levels are fine. Oil is about 5 mm from the top.

I've emailed NWP to ask them to change the oil pressure switch on Sat.

Not too sure what the problem is but mine has always done this since I bought the car last year. Strangely it only does it after it's been raining or I've washed it, so basically when the engine bay get's wet :S

Slight weep of oil there is quite normal. Mine's had a leak there for the last five years (it isn't enough to cause an oil level drop between 5000 mile oil changes). Rocker cover reseal will sort it, but not worth doing that unless other work is being done on the head.

The lights came on again this morning whilst the engine was cold and as I was going up a bit of a hill (yesterday it was whilst I was coming down a hill !). So I checked everything again before I left work today and the oil level was around 75% (showing 5 of 6 zeros on the dash) and I also pushed the connector for the pressure switch a little to make sure it was on okay.....and the lights did not come on at all on the way home.Hmmm...

Just above the oil filter,to the left of the dip stick.....please let me know if i'm wrong ! Looks like a pig to get off though so I just waggled the connector a little.

My 172 oil light flickers when its been wet or after washing the car occasionally . I washed the car a few days ago using the pressure washer then took it for a quick drive but didnt go more than 5 miles. I got in the car tonight and the oil light flickered quite brightly until the temperature got up and then it went out. Last week I drove back from the North East back to Chester on the M6 and the oil light was just coming on dimly all the way back intermittently. Its been a fault with the car since I bought it 2 years ago. The engine is sweet and doesnt show any signs of low oil pressure and doesnt use any oil even on the track. Is it worth changing the switch for a new one or is it the connector thats likely to be needing cleaning?
