182 Trophy or 200

  200 FF Storm Grey
I don't think the 200 will age well so personally i'd get a trophy that isn't going to de-value that much, have fun with it, leave it standard, then go for something else 6-12 months down the line

Trophy!

they'll have a greater base value after all the depreciation hits then any of the mk.3's, with the possible exception of the F1 edition.

admitedly, you'll need to spend more to keep yourself in dampers

I've not driven a 200 yet. But by all accounts it's rediscovered the magic that some felt the 197 lost in comparison to the trophy.

So the 200 has a far better interior than a trophy, as well as more refinement and better build. Better box, and brakes.

Will it be more fun than a trophy, doubtful. But should be a better all round package.

Depends what you want!

Having come from a 182 (which i absolutely loved for 4 years) to a spec'd up 197 it is simply the better car in all areas bar fuel consumption which is shocking BUT tbh i do really need it to be great due to my personal circumstances! Having driven a 200, this is only worth doing if you want a brand new car as top spec for top spec there is f**k all difference between the two imo!

If its just performace you are after rather than modern looks, build quality, age/milage factor and top notch chassis in its own right the Trophy is just aswell for what it costs mind.

This sort of question is always bound to spark some pretty fierce arguments. Here are mine...

I owned a 182 FF for a year (did about 30000 miles and three track days in it) then I owned a Clio Trophy for a year (another 30000 miles and about 20 track days).

Now I own a 200.

I'm still in the run in period but already I would say the 200 is MILES ahead of the Trophy. The build quality for a start, simply cannot be compared. The spread of torque is in a different league (the 200 feels almost turbocharged in the lower rev ranges and sounds simply fantastic around 3000rpm). The steering is MUCH sharper than the trophy, which makes it far easier to control in the corners. On turn in the whole car employs a delicious yaw, much like my brother's Evo IX, which lets you know the rear end is getting involved in the cornering process and informs you that oversteer is available for indulgence should the mood take you.

On track the Trophy was fun for a few laps but I found it a little one dimensional: turn in fast and it'd go on three wheels, turn in faster and it'd go on three wheels. Turn in on the brakes with a little scandinavian and the rear end would sort of hop around, but it was a very difficult car to slide smoothly. On the brakes it would often swerve around as the rear end unweighted, and of course the slow steering and awkward driving position were far from optimal for maximum attack track driving. I can't say for sure yet, but I have a feeling the 200 will prove far more capable on track.

If you look at the total cost of ownership you will not find much difference between the Trophy and the 200. Ok, the 200 is more expensive to purchase and will depreciate more, but it won't cost a penny in repairs or maintenance for the first 3 years (you can even get servicing thrown in for the first few years if you bargain hard enough). My Trophy by contrast needed cam belt, aux belt, rear dampers, new clutch, gearbox, drive shafts, etc etc in it's short time with me (much of that was track related but still - it's an older car with older technology that will probably have been driven pretty hard in the last 4-5 years). Fuel consumption was quite high for the first couple of hundred miles during the run in period but it has come down quite a bit now. I also have the impression that the on board computer is calculating differently in the newer car (it seems to continue counting below 20mph, which the Trophy would just ignore). If you actually measure the real consumption difference rather than just looking at the trip computer you will not find much difference.

Of course, the Trophy has a special reputation and the uniqueness factor(largely because of evo magazine). But the reality of the situation is that the 200 has absolutely moved the game on; faster, better exhaust note more rounded handling repetoir, safer, more practical, cheaper to run and generally a more accomplished all-rounder.

Ok, que angry backlash from Trophy owners.

^^^ Spot on. Take the advice from someone that has driven/owned both.

Nice write up maduse.

I haven't driven both but I think it's fair to say the 200 will be better, that's just the way it goes. As time goes by things should get better.

However, I think the stumbling block is that just now the Trophy is 7k and 200 14k. That's a whopping difference. No doubt it's better but it won't be twice as good in value terms.

Exactly!

Also you wont find many well spec'd 200's (your FF, Recaro'd up, cup chassie'd bad boys) with hardly any miles for that money either! Try closer to 16k i reckon! Theres a bare spec'd FF second hand one just gone on PH today in a not so desirable colour at over 15k!

Unless you take a look at Army200's in our own FS section! Bargain of the century! ;)

Or you buy a 172 with a decent set of coiovers, for less then half the value of a trophy.. Horses for courses TBH ;)

It's difficult comparing a Trophy to that.

A decent set of coilovers is £1k and a decent 172 with belts done is about 3.5k - 4.5k to. Then if you want the Turinis and Cup spoilers that's another £600. Already you're nearly upto Trophy money which will be at least 2 years younger - so you'd only really save £1,500 max doing that. If you got a ph1 172 then it maybe nearer to half your money again, that is, if you meant ph1 172.

It's also a poor comparison as the only one in these discussions which is limited edition and different is the Trophy. I know Jay doesn't rate ltd runs but I do and will pay more for a Ltd run. If I get a 197 it will always be a R27.

  LY 200
^I didnt say i dont rate limited runs! lol

I just dont like higher milaged, older cars (ones that still cost more for a dealership car) hence why i went for a very late 197 thats basically an R27 minus decals and a 1-500 plaque!

  LY 200
Haha i aint mate!

I would've happily taken and paid more for a late 58 plate R27 with 6.5k (or there abouts) on the clock but reality has it that there wasnt any out there on the market! The ones at dealers (presumably the approved cars and best ones) were up at 12/12.5k with alot more miles and less warranty on them!

No logic in buying one of those cars for more money than i paid for mine considering the only difference is a plaque and decals! By all means throw some other benefits of owning the R27 (other than deprieciation as i aint bothered about that - I will sell mine in spotless condition in no less than 3/4 years and there will be little more than a K between them) and i will consider the benefits of the limited run car but until then i dont think there are many personally!

  Clio 182 Trophy. No. 189
Limited runs just make the car different from the norm, that is something which I enjoy as a car owner (sad hey!). My car previous to the Trophy and 172 was a Citroen AX GT cabriolet, that says it all!!

I wonder how people on here get 28mpg in their 197. 26mpg is the best I have got and that is driving like a granny. 24mpg is more on the mark and the smiles are much bigger.

Having owned a CTR, the 197 fuel economy is crap (and that is being polite). Question is what effect did it have on my decision to buy one.......NONE.

Done a 200 mile trip today in my 197 and got 31.2mpg, and for 10 miles i was having a play with a boxster!
