182 various "issues"

  Nissan 350Z
I'm just wondering if its normal for the 182 to have lumpy idling. Its like you can feel the engine being lumpy. Its not apparent when the car is cold, and once on the move its fine. It is not close to cutting out or anything, its just not particularly smooth. I'm running optimax BTW, but I've tried other brands, no difference.

Seconly, i notice when i steer at low speeds, i.e. parking etc that turning the engine seems to result in the engines revs going down, its not quite close to stalling, but its pretty noticable.

Third, I've asked before but didnt get any responses sadly, so I'll ask again :rasp: basically when travelling at 80+, especially in windy weather, I get a squealing / whistling sound coming from the dash / windscreen area, that is constant. Its been back to the dealers once, who fitted a part they thought would fix it, but it didnt.

Finally, if you are in neutral and you put it into first, it seems to make a knocking noise. Its not too bad if you are very gentle / smooth / slow to put it in gear, but if you just use it normally, it makes a knock / thud type sound.

Its my first french car and I guess what they say about build quality is true! Not particularly great for a car with 7000 miles on the clock, but hey, I was expecting it! I'd be grateful for any comments / opinions on these issues.

  Clio 172 mk2
I've only had my 172 a couple of months and have noticed similar things.

Engine is no where near as smooth/consistent on idle as my old car and the car does make a very small sound when engaging first. Revs do drop slightly when turning wheel parking etc but I'm sure that's got something to do with the power steering pump.

My car has around 14000 on the clock now so is by no means old...I think it could be a case of good old Renault traits. I've had a Renault and Pugeot before the 172 so am quite used to it.

I get all those symtoms exept the whistling.

1. Is it like a tapping noise as that is meant to be a release valve of something near the drivers side fron wheel arch.

2. Some of us get that too. I used to get a knocking noise that was fixed by renault but didnt help the engine power bit... not too sure what that is.

3. When you get the noise at 80, put your window down and move the mirror as ive heard this can make the noise due to the gap... possibly.

4. And i also get the cruch occasionally but am just slow when putting it in. Press the cluch and release it again if you feel its not going to be smooth and can sometimes help.

Best i can do. Hope this helps.,..

is the power steering pump on these electric? if so that will be why the revs drop when you turn.

but you shouldnt really be turning when on the sot should you? doesnt it f**k ya tyresup?

Thanks for the replies so far, good to know i'm not alone - and i'll try the mirror. At first i thought it might be the wipers as my dads old AX GT used to make a whistle sound from the wipers, but i just use the wipers when its happening and it doesnt make any difference. I'll try the wing mirrors next time i get the chance, although it doesnt sound like its coming from there, but its worth a try.

I know what your saying, but i dont do that - its like when i pull into a parking space, i'll often dip the clutch (car still moving) thats when i notice it.

ah right..

ive only ever owned 2 cars both being french so im used to these kinda 'niggles'

but at the end of th e day.. we're not driving 25k+ cars here..

theyre sub15k pocket rockets with s**t loads of features for what they are.

Hope this helps
If it is lumpy when cold this is due to the ECU setup thanks to the EEC to reduce emmisions my 172 does this.
The wind noise is from the hole under the drivers side mirror where the thermometer would be if on the continent mine starts wistling at 40+ opened the window and covered it with my finger and it stopped

-This has been explained to me as the normal when the engine is warming up. Because it's a VVT engine it has to sort itself out, but once it's warmer it's normally a lot better. Or so I was told by a Renault Technician.

Seconly, i notice when i steer at low speeds, i.e. parking etc that turning the engine seems to result in the engines revs going down, its not quite close to stalling, but its pretty noticable.

-This happens with all cars with power steering, due to it being assisted, when you have it on full lock the power steering motor is under the most stress and the engine revs will drop

- Have a look under the drivers wing mirror, there is a hole there were the temp sensor should be, you will see the sensor on the passenger mirror. Gaffer tape is one answer to this!

Finally, if you are in neutral and you put it into first, it seems to make a knocking noise. Its not too bad if you are very gentle / smooth / slow to put it in gear, but if you just use it normally, it makes a knock / thud type sound.

-Dunno!! My mine has a noise when I change gear and it about the same sort of age

Ah... thanks for that, I've just had a look and sure enough, there is a sizeable hole in the wing mirror. Might try covering that up and see if it helps. Cheers guys :)

  182 - conneries de c
Welcome to the joys of owning a french motor!

I have all the symptoms on my 182 you have, apart from the whistle at speed......guess I'm lucky!

But you know what, all those niggles drift away when I plant my right foot.....

gotta luv these vehicles!
