It doesnt just happen to 197s, it is happening to 200s as well as my thread mentions, have a look on renaultsport community forum as well as the clio197.net forum.
My car has only covered 23k and the box is shot, others have covered far less than that and have had new boxes - seems an issue.
It may be 'luck of the draw' but it is certainly a concern that you may need to replace your gearbox every 23k miles or so - I would expect a gearbox to last the lifetime of the car....

Renault really are jokers. The only car manufacturer in the WORLD who do not bother with ongoing quality improvement through the lifecycle of the product. Serial. It's quite remarkable. Molten steering wheels, collapsed chairs, plastic gearboxes...and not only do these issues not get addressed in one car, they transfer the same problems into the next, and shrug their shoulders. Stick to selling onions.
