197 R27 OR 197 Cup

Hi guys, new here! :D

I'm looking at buying my first 197, and have researched them over the past 2 weeks or so...so not very long and I need some advice. There are 2 models I'm looking at the moment, a 197 cup & a 197 R27 F1 edition. The 197 cup is through a dealer and the R27 is private....I'm currently siding on the dealer because of the gear box issues I've read about and don't want to get stung later on down the line. I also noticed that the R27 has had a change of plates a few years ago, apparently belonging to a Megane. Any reason why this is done? I can only think of negative reasons to be honest....

The cup has 16k less miles on the clock and has a FSH, where as the F1 R27 doesn't have the FSH which I'm worried about. (& the change of plates).. It has a years M.O.T on it though and work has been done at registered Renault dealers which is good.

For someone who doesn't know jack about going to view a car, & what to look out for when picking on up have you got any advice on what to do & the issues mentioned above.

Thanks in advance!

Gaz.

Thanks guys will do!

Do you have links to both cars?

Normally I'd recommend the r27 but the one you want sounds suspect.

Is the car for a daily or weekend/track car?

If it's a daily I 110% would not recommend the cup.

Get a standard car fitted with the cup chassis or an r27. The few creature comforts make it a bit more bearable day to day.

And where are you from?

I think I PM'd you. :)

I tell you what also helps, if you know the Reg plate then use the GOV.org mot checker, you can look through all previous mot's passed, failed and advisories so gives a decent picture of what failed and what's been replaced... helps paint a picture for you and absolutely free:up:

I had a cup, if it's well specced the only thing your missing is climate, powered mirrors, colour coded bump strips and a soft touch dash.

All the other things on an r27 like climate, xenons were also options... So you can still get an r27 with cheapie headlights and manual AC

You also can't get a GW r27 (well there was one)

I do hanker after it even now, one of the best cars I've owned tbh!

I'm more tempted by the R27 to be honest, but its the riskier buy of the 2. Its the gearbox that scares me, just from reading up on 197's.
If I were to privately buy it, and the greabox did go, do Renault offer any kind of service to replace it free or with a discount to new owners. Its not got a F.S.H so theres that too.
I do want it as a project too, to do up and tinker with so I dont mind the cosmetic stuff and i'll try and restore it to standard.
But that Gearbox haunts me.....
Also forgive me, whats a GW R27? :)

No chance on a free gearbox, you *may* get a good will contribution, but on a 197, i doubt it. I just bought a replacement for mine, and got a specialist to swap it over. They are a weak point, but I had 2 197's and probably covered around 80k in them. A test drive should weed a bad one out, if it doesn't shift smoothly above 5000 rpm, walk away or negotiate a heavy discount. When they work, the gearboxes are bloody brilliant in terms of feel and throw, much better than the meggy I currently have,

If there is no evidence of gearbox work then it's a toss of a coin, it'll either give you years of service or it'll eat itself... If you want a good gearbox then don't buy a Renault I'm afraid... However there are many great Renault specialists on this forum that can save you a fortune over Renault prices, my 182 gearbox is being replaced by a very good specialist as we speak, not cheap but a fraction of Renault... Go with your heart and tackle any problems when they arise I say!:up:

oooooh that is a very nice looking car.... :)
Well guys thanks for the advice. I'm hopefully going to look at it early this week so I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks for the expertise again!
