197 revearse gear lever pull sticking?

Can anyone help just taken my 06 197 to a local specialist to see why after i have selected reverse the gear lever pull stays in the upward position so when i try to select 1st it will not go in until i have manualy pulled it back down, he said that he had not seen this problem before and that it appered the spring had broken and qouted me £141 for a new gear lever plus fitting, can anyone help with a cheaper way to put this problem right,

Sounds like a mech fault... Replace the selector with a used unit if you can find one breaking will be cheaper.

From memory you've got to remove the knob to full dismantle the reverse mechanism. I'd start by seeing exactly what is abusing it to stick.
