197s back end Squirming under hard braking??

As above really....

When jammimg on the anchors coming from say 80-90 down to zero, the back end proper swerves and fidgets. Its a bit unnerving sometimes, as you have to counter it with the steering to stop you changing lanes!!

Its not just this one either, i've had three of them and driven loads of them and they've all done it.

Anyone know why/how this happens??

weight transfer i'd imagine lol ;)

probably due to the immense brakes on them?

Yep get it on mine, I presume it's because of the huge brakes on the front and the (in comparison) weak brakes on the back. Can become a bit unnerving if you aren't prepared for it!

yep i used to get it
its due to weight transfer as R30BC said as you hit the brakes the car leans forward which it turn takes away some of the traction on the rear wheels
but now ive dropped it 40mm its so much better

What determines the weight transfer to the front is the amount of retardation, and that's limited not by the size of the brakes but by the amount of grip. Since the 197 doesn't run racing slicks and have wings to push the car down it has the same amount of retardation as everything else that drives around the roads. What is unusual about it is that weird front suspension that has a steering axis that's separate from the strut. I suspect that that's more likely to be the problem. You get that sort of instability when the front suspension geometry is such that under heavy braking squat causes the trail goes to zero. The contact patch of the tyre has to trail the point at which the steering axis meets the ground or the car goes all squirrelly and darts all over the road. Sounds like the front-end doesn't have enough anti-squat designed in.

i get this in my 1.2 16v sometimes, doesn't feel good!

Just make sure you dont have to break that hard on a normal road, its due to the front end dipping down and taking the traction off the rear wheels which means they start to jump around a little bit and get a little cheeky.

Had a complete pant spoiling moment earlier in the year. Had to stomp on the anchors from 3 figure speed and weeeeeeeeee slidy slidy back end.
