2 computers, 1 mouse and keyboard

I need to run two computers side by side, which I've set up.

Can anyone with a bit more tech knowledge let me know if I can use 1 mouse and 1 keyboard for both?

KVM? or do they need to be controlled simultaneously?

If you have two monitors side by side you can use the software that Jackle has linked. If not you will need a KVM.

I've installed Synergy on both, I've set one as the server and the other as the client.

Server is telling me this:

A KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) is a box which allows you to control multiple computers with just one monitor, mouse and keyboard. Since you have two monitors this does not apply to you.

As for your issue, have you allowed the program through the firewall, and do you have any 3rd party firewall software installed?

Oh god I have no idea mate, I'm a proper amateur with all this. Where would I look?
