200 engine failure at 22k

Well I've just had about the worst experience of car buying I could have.
Bought a 20500 mile 200 which was all original, in perfect condition and had full history.
Been after a 200 for 6 years but discovered the wife was pregnant on the Tuesday before I was going to order on the Saturday. She told me I could get one once she was 5 as a joke. So I did.
I'd had it for 9 weeks and done just over 1k and there is now a hole in the block and the engine is scrap.

What's my best bet for a new engine?
Is this a common fault?
Any ideas on what the cause could be?

Did you buy it privately or from a trader?

Its not a common issue mate, cambelt failure due to the aux belt wrapping its self around the cambelt is about the only failure the F4R experiences (unless its been modified outwith tolerances etc)

It'll be ripe for a Megane 250 conversion now, i'd have thought?

From a trader. Belt hasn't gone and trader are saying without knowing what it is they won't do anything? I don't want to spend money on diagnosis and then small claims court when the cost of those might be equal to a new engine. The fault would have had to have been there when I bought it to stand a chance as I only took 1 month warranty not expecting anything costly due to mileage and condition.

You're in luck then, get onto citizens advice bureau.

From you buying it you have 6 months from the point of purchase for the garage to either repair it or offer you a full refund. Explain this to him, although i'll bet you my birds starboard side tit he's already in full knowledge of this.

The warranty thing doesn't even enter into it.

Do NOT back down.

I’m sure someone on here will know more but I’m think you get 3 month warranty by default, and if it was sold not fit for purpose then they’re responsible

Edit: ^^yeh, that

I'll get on to them first thing Monday. I'm just mad as I spent 3 months searching for a low mileage all original in red with recaros and spoiler without the black roof or speed lines (I only wanted exactly what I was going to order). Found one, bought it, got all the ear ache from the Mrs, she cheered up, then it blew up!!

The Megane 250 conversion has caught my eye I will admit but what's the cost likely to be?

Phone citizens advice bureau first so you know what to say should the whole thing go lemon.

I'd give the garage an oppertunity to rectify it before playing the CAB card.

Not sure on the 250 conversion cost, a few quid anyway.

The car needs to be fit for purpose. It isn't.
It is now the dealers responsibility to prove that the car never had a fault when you bought it.
(They can't, because it's fucked)

If I was you I'd be after my money back instead of another engine. Go elsewhere.

Please listen to Daniels advice. He knows what he is taking about.

It might be a conrod that's bent and made a hole in the engine block. It's not unheard of here and there have been quite a few cases of the same thing happening in mainland europe.

I can honestly say its the first time i've ever heard of it. Have you got any links to other cars its happened to?

I'm trying to find some of the old posts i've read but since the other forum was updated I can't see a lot of the older threads. If I find any threads i'll post the links here.

if a rod/bolt has let go I wouldn't trust them to source a replacement engine or anything to that effect. Daniel's advice, and stick to your guns
