2000 Clio 1.4s problems :(

  2003 Clio 172
Hi gang,

Having some problems with me girlfriends (now fiancee :) ) wee 2000 Clio 1.4 s.

The car seems to run off a cylinder, poor fuel economy, low power etc which returns at about 4000 rpm with a wee kick and i suspected that the coil pack was iffy (single pack screwed to top of rocker cover) so i swapped it with a known good un from the scrappy to no avail.

I am very dubious about our NI renault dealerships but was left with no alternative but to leave the car in and my fears were realized.

1st Trip : Renault looked at the car and said that the coil was definately faulty, i told them that i had swapped a known good coil in and it hadnt fixed it but they said, oh no, you have to code it. i replied with well, if it doesnt fix it do we get our money and old coil back....nope was the reply. So i walked out.

2nd Trip : different dealership, left car in.....and was advised that the car was running off a cylinder as it needed a service (which incidentally it already had).......this would cost 300 quid....i said no...........then, got a phone call saying they would do the service for 150......i said no and asked was the coil not faulty and they said .......no, it seems fine (WTF?)......they said then that they would clean the throttle body as this was dirty and could be causing it......i asked again.....if it doesnt do i pay.......they said, yes you gotta pay regardless......i was out of ideas so i said give it a go.......absolutely no change and 70 quid outta pocket.....FFS! they said aah well.

3rd Trip : same dealership as second time.........this is what i got.....we sent some data to france (yeah right) and your coil is faulty and it needs a new brain...........you cant buy second hand as they need coded to your car....yeah right i said...how much....600 quid....no thanks...see ya.

This is what i am up against and i cannot stand it. I drive a Civic CRX and if i have a problem that i cannot fix, my honda dealership always help out and charge me nothing for advice...they have been bang on every time.

I always hear about the poor reputation of Renaults but for gods sake, this car is 6 years old....my Civic is 16 with 110 k on the clock and has never ever let me down and i mash it all the time. The clio has 30 k on it.

I would really appreciate any help of advice you can give guys in diagnosing this problem as i have accepted the fact that NI renault dealerships are after 1 thing....money instead of happy customers......they wont last too long at that game.

The car is a 2000 1.4 mpi S clio......i think it was referred to as the sport with projector headlights, fogs and alloys etc.......

this is doing my head in.....if we canny fix this soon...we'll shift it and get another Honda..........

thanks in advance

Andy

Best advice i can give is find a Renault Specialist, I know plenty of garages round my way that will help you find the problem free of charge. and only charge you when you want them to fix it.

Thanks for that dude.....the problem is over here...that most of the renault dealerships are owned by Charles Hurst = Lookers Group = PITA

Apparently when they connected it to the CLIP machine it showed no fault.......

any dealerships you could recommend to call for advice....anyone on here?

I personally steer clear of Dealerships, and take my custom to Garges that specialise in Renaults. The ones that i know of are v v far away from you tho!

ok............point proven..........
Renault dealerships are greedy pigs in Northern Ireland
I looked at everything you guys suggested but to no avail.....
so i took it back to basics.......

and

i found a hole burnt through the rubber boot on the plug lead that goes over the spark plug and a hairline crack running the length of the plug.....
problem solved

does that sound like a faulty brain and coil costing 600 quid to you?

not me.....

i am sorely tempted to report them or do something about this....how many people do they con and get away with it....
i know i missed it but surely a "dealership garage" should spot that
anyway

thanks for the input gang
