just a thought, am if im talking bollox then forgive me, but if you put larger wheels on your car, you will trvael more miles per hr ifor the same engine revelutions., so in theory if you put 24 inch alloys (with axle extensions) on your 172, could you get the 140 standard mph up to 200 with the same revs!!!

what you want to o is stick on some L.E.D washer jets as they increase BHP by 20% then get some 2 fast 2 furious graphics which will knock off 2 seconds off the 0-60 and will give you an increase of 15 mph then wash the car really well. this is called a weight reduction as your removing dust particals which slow you down. so if you have a car which does 0-60 in 12 seconds and top speed of 110mph your looking at 0-60 in around 5 seconds and top speed around 215mph. hope this helps
Based on the 172 having 16" wheels and a top speed of about 144mph (by gearing), I guess you would have to increase the circumfrance by 25% to get to 200mph.
so...
16" * pi = 50 inches
Add another 13" to the circunfrance...63.
Divide it by pi....and you get about 20". So yes, 20" wheels and no wind resistance and you are there mate.
Better make it 21" wheels, so as you can thrash thrust2 at the lights.

haha I like questions like these. In theory, yes bigger wheels give you greater potential for top speed. In practice the bigger you go, the more mass, friction and circumference your wheels have needing greater power to get them up to speed and maintain it (Im really oversimplifying this btw). So in effect you diminish your cars acceleration by going for big wheels. However, assuming that you somehow bumped up your 172s output to say 300bhp with a similar increase in torque, then yes you could push the bigger wheels through the same final drive and attain a higher top speed. Problem is that the Clio is not the most aerodynamic of shapes and there will be a certain speed at which you hit a brick wall, needing a hell of a lot more power to keep accelerating.
On a standard valver I always found this to be around 120-125mph on the speedo, even though it is capable of 130 roughly. Likewise with my turbo valver running around 240-250bhp you can feel the brick wall effect at 145mph. On the autobahn of course.
To achieve 200mph in a Clio youd need to firstly look at around 500-600bhp for starters, weight of the car itself isnt really important as long as youve got enough straight that will give you time to accelerate. Then youd have to sort out the gearing to make the speed you want possible. Next up is the aerodynamics, and were not just talking about taping up all the shutlines and putting the mirrors and aerial in the boot. Youd need to seriously redesign the body surfaces to completely negate any aerodynamic lift whilst trying to maintain a low level of drag. Tricky.

why would you have to alter the gearing..... as if the engine tis turning the wheels the same revelutions in a minutes but due to a larger curcumfrance, you are travelling a greater distance in the same time, maybe it is just more power neede to push the engine up to the higher revs!! thus 200mph hey presto!!!
The wheels on a car are the final components in the drivtrain and although the easiest to change, they shoud be one of the last things to be altered to get a higher top speed. To get anywhere nere the 200mph figure would be impossible just by changing your wheels, mainly due to the fact that you could probably do it with about 350bhp but you would need nearer 900lb/ft of toqrue to rotate the wheels this figure would be impossible to get on a driveable engine without a rebuild every 500miles etc.
