225/45/18 vs 225/55/18 is there much difference?

Need some winter tyres.

car comes with 225/45/18, is a 225/55/18 much different?

Bigger rolling radius but not uncommon to fir larger tyres, particularly winters.

The 55 is a % of the tyre width indicated in the tyre profile.

So a 225 tyre with a 55 profile is 12.4cm from the rim to the tread vs 10.1cm.

You can then convert the rim width to cm and calculate the rolling circumference using pi.

On the back of mine I went from 225/40/18 to 235/45/18 and I f**king hate how chunky the sidewall looks!

Would you not be cheaper to buy a 'wheel and tyre' package from somewhere like http://www.mytyres.co.uk/ . Go down to a 16" steel. I just checked for me and an 18" tyre is £147 or I can get a 16" steel wheel and tyre for £130.

So i'd be ok to swap to those tyres?

Seen a full set, albeit second hand for about £200. Will only be used for this winter then sold, so not to bothered about keeping them.

Yeah should be fine.

Usually only thing it does is throw the speedo out by under reading or over reading.

Usually theres a sticker on the car or in the handbook that tells you what the winter size is as 9 times out of 10 its different to the actual summer tyre size anyway.
