360 with 3 rings - Is it worth anything ?

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Its a June 2006 premium model so out of warranty I guess. Wouldnt mind but its only been used as a DVD player for last 12 months

Had it since new, never been messed with or opened.

How much is it worth roughly if I sold it as faulty ?

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Heard mixed reports about fixing them, would I not just be better trying to flog it with no attempts at fixing it?

  Mk2 ph1 clio
Theres a 6 year duty of care on anything electronic thats bought in the UK, 5 in scotland.

Remind them of that and you should get a repair at a reduced cost or a partial refund. Basicaly, what evers most cost effective for microsoft.

No idea what it is worth, check ebay.

Easy fix tho, take apart - new thermal compound (Artic Silver 5) and bobs your uncle.

Find out the exact code of the fault by doing this....

--==SECONDARY ERROR CODES==-
The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code

* Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
* Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
* The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

* All four lights flashing - 0
* One light flashing - 1
* Two Lights flashing - 2
* Three lights flashing - 3

Then from there this gives you the error codes...

E01: possibly a power supply problem

E02: possibly a Network Interface problem (might be fixed by loosening the x-clamps)

E03: possibly Power problem could be the PSU could be the GPU/CPU, somehow the console isn't getting clean power from the power supply.

E04: Unconfirmed: There is a problem with the Southbridge Chip usually dealing with how it connects to the mainboard (cold solder joint/bridged solder joints)

E05: CPU over heating - If you are receiving this error after disassembling your console make sure to all 8 of the heatsinc screws are tightened securely to the board/heatsink holes.

E06: GPU over heating -ensure your x-clamps are installed properly.

E07: RAM over heating

E08: Unconfirmed: GPU Malfunction, similar to error E18

E09: Unconfirmed: This can be caused by two completely different things either:
A. DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard based on how it connects to the DVD drive.
B. GPU error, generally caused by a poor connection to the mainboard (cold solder joints/bridged solder joints) See error E18 for more information

E10: Unconfirmed: CPU error, generally caused by a poor connection to the mainboard (cold solder joints/bridged solder joints). This can also be triggered by an error with the TSOP.

E11: (not yet known)

E12: Possibly a problem with temperature control

E13: Unknown: could be caused by a short between the heatsink and surrounding capacitors

E14: (not yet known)

E15: (not yet known)

E16: Unknown: Likely a cold solder join in GPU or Ram chips (see error E18)

E17: (not yet known)

E18: Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard.
There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips. The other involves re-Heating the chips. DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.

E19: Unknown: GPU Error this is usually caused by bridged solder points where the GPU connects to the mainboard. see error E18 for more detailed information

E20: likely a Ram error, this can be caused by a cold or bridged solder joint on one of the Ram chips.
...
E32: (not yet known)

E33: (not yet known)

E34: (not yet known)

E35: over heating GPU possibly due to lack of thermal compound.
...
E45: Unknown (possibly dashboard update related)

E64: DVD Drive Error - Dvd drive timed out during reset :Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc. This can also be caused by the tray not being fully closed on boot. also it could mean that the Kernel can't be launched/signature in NAND Flash chip is broken It could be possible after bad update. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.p...;#entry4156375 This might also be caused by a bad SATA cable.

E65: DVD Drive Error - Dvd drive is not DMA configured :Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc. This can also be caused by the tray not being fully closed on boot.

E66: DVD Drive Error - Dvd drive pairing failure: DVD model, or version does not match that of the version expected by the dashboard. OR the firmware version on the drive is older then the firmware version expected by the dashboard. Make sure the DVD drive is of the same version originally included with the console and that it is using either the original firmware included with the console or newer. if drive can eject, read, and write under windows but errors on console, replacing original firmware should fix issue.

E67: Hard Drive Error - Hard drive timed out during reset: It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it.

E68: Hard Drive Error - Hard drive not DMA configured: It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it. Also this can be caused by a problem with the fans that make them draw too much power, it can also be caused if you have unnecessary accessories attached to the console like an external fan unit. Attempt to remove unnecessary accessories first, and then necessary components such as the hard drive and USB devices. If you have any case mods you may want to investigate those as well.

E69: Hard Drive Error - Reading the HD Security sector failed: It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

E70: Hard Drive Error - Hard drive not found

E71: Dashboard Error - Error within Xam.xex: possibly a dashboard update error, Check below in the "Console Reset Codes" for instructions. If that does not work there is no other solution and the console must be sent back to MS for repair.

E72: Dashboard Error - Error within Xam.xex: Like a problem with the NAND flash

E73: I/O Hardware Error - Couldn't calibrate HSIO Bus from edram: this error is likely caused by a problem with the Ethernet port or supporting control devices

E74: I/O Hardware Error - HSIO related, could be crc error, or many things: There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. Microsoft covers this error under their 3-year warranty, this is availble to anyone who hasn't modified their console. contact MS to get a free replacement console before attempting to fix this yourself. Failing that this error In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement (see error 0102)

E75: Ethernet Error - Couldn't read ethernet phy vendor: Strange but sometimes caused by the DVD drive not being connected properly.

E76: Ethernet Error - Couldn't complete ethernet reset: This error is usually cased by the Ethernet port's controller chip, a dead chip may not cause the error but removing the Ethernet controller chip does, it may also be caused by other Ethernet related problems.

E77: Ethernet Error - phy request is already processing/reading reg failed/Failed to write reg: This error is sometimes caused by power problems with the RAM chips. It might be cause by a short between the heat sink and resistors or by more serious problems with the RAM. [more info]

E78: Dashboard Error - AsicId check failed

E79: Dashboard Error - Couldn't start xam.xex: probably a file system corruption, it could also be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it.

E80: Dashboard Error - Wrong LDV version in NAND Flash: This is in new dashboard. You have the update but haven't R3T6 resistor. You can:
-Downgrade to old dashboard, solder back the resistor and then update your xbox
-If you have CPU Key, get current NAND Flash image and fix LDV (just add 1 up to latest kernel). (See error 1100)

Cheers richy, will try that when I get home.

The 6 year option looks like its worth a punt too! - Assumming this is sales of goods act or something, be interesting to see what they say.

I did buy it when they were nearly £300 too!

Have all the original packaging and receipts in the loft.

  Bumder With A Buffer
the RROD had an extended warranty from memory but cant remember what it covered.

As 3 red rings can mean more than 1 fault.

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Well its 0020 ..

E08: Unconfirmed: GPU Malfunction, similar to error E18

Will try my luck with MS, more than likely just laugh at me and say tough its £100 to fix it.

  Street Triple R
Ive had the exact same thing this week, it is a late 2006 machine, but I registered it on their site and am just about to send it off for repair....no mention of any cost yet

Just politely refuse and pop into your local CAB (citizen advice beuro) and explain to them!

They can't refuse to do anything at all because then you have them by the short and curlies as it's in the sales of goods act that they have this duty of care.

Usualy it's through the retailer I.E wherever you bought it from but with Xbox, i know from our place, that we dont deal with any in store as microsoft ask for the customer to contact them directly!

If its not taken the Summer 09 Update (to 8*** Kernal) It could be worth more than you think.

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Just spoke with their support, £100 to fix :( , I asked for a complaints address or email, she couldnt find one! .... mmm really ... classic!

Might give it up as a bad job and flog on fleabay as it stands, although I might take on the MS machine and see if I can win. Wouldnt mind, I've just spent £3k on MS software at work, surely I deserve a bit of goodwill.

Just fix it. I've fixed 3 for mates and one that I sold on, none have stopped working since and been over a year for 2 of them now. The kit only costs like £4 on eBay and comes with guide, it's pretty easy

Which kit have you used mate ? Do you have a specific link ?

A guy here tried it before and had no joy with his - could have been a crappy kit ?

This is the one I buy, usually gets to me next day or day after. You need a Torx T8 & T10, if you have these then:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XBOX360-XCLAM...s_VideoGameAccessories_JN?hash=item2c5305ccad

if not then:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XBOX360-X-CLA...s_VideoGameAccessories_JN?hash=item2c52c4df9e

If you don't have them it may be cheaper to buy top one and find them in other listings as the bottom link is bit pricey as he includes a massive set of torx which you dont need.

Mine ALL had Error 0102 though and not 0020 but the description to 0020 is that is is similar to 0102

There is no problem with me fixing it myself, built plenty of pc's in my time ;)

Just weighing the options up thats all.

Aaaaah haha fair enough.

Shouldnt be too hard then.

I've been lucky so far and i had an original like you paid almost £300 for it.

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Well I tried and failed ...

Sent a formal letter of complaint to head office in Reading and reminded them of their obligations as a manufacturer under the 'Supply of Goods and Services act 1982'. Got a phone call just now and she basically said tough politely, its down to 'wear and tear' and its £82 to get it fixed. I have a 27 year old Atari 2700 here that works fine, a 20 year old megadrive that works fine and a 3 1/2 year old 360 thats fkt!

Looking like the repair kit is the favorite now :(

  M2 Competition
Its not down to wear and tear, its not a working/ mechanical part that expects wear as such, they have to fix it.

Keep going out of principal.

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
This is purely out of principal. I'd rather spend £100 on my kids than with MS for something that is inherently faulty. Maybe a letter before action might give them a nudge?

I very much doubt you'll get anywhere mate. The sales of goods act states that things have to last a proportionate amount of time.

So a £2,000 watch you could argue is supposed to last longer than a year. A £2 watch, probably not.

It's over 3 years old. You don't get a warranty that long with most cars. So you're not going to get anywhere with MS.

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Just gave consumer direct a quick buzz, he said Argos should repair it free of charge, any problems give them a call back. Will give that a try first.

lol @ 4 quid repair kit.
I may be the 'bloke on here' spiezel was reffering to.
90% of faults on them are dry joints which can be fixed with a decent heat gun and some £3 steel washers and m5 screws.
just the screws / washers MAY fix them but i wouldnt hold breath in long run.
faulty ones can go for anything between from 8 quid to 30 depending on what muppet is bidding on it and god only knows why elite go for more when its exactly the same motherboard with a different coloured case (im talking console only here).

If you anywhere near east mids or fancy a punt sending it me then i can only have a look, if i cant fix it it, it dont cost you - simple as.

Spoken to Jamie and Louism on here if you need to check or search my previous posts.

As I've said I've fixed 3 with that kit and 2 have been running fine over a year and another one over 6 months. So it seems to work just fine...

A mate of mines has RROD'ed so I've told him to buy one of those kits and give it a try. For £4 what have you got to lose? Thanks for the link.

  Trophy #267
lol order them from a hardware store then - get a bag of 100 washers for 46p from screwfix !
m5 steel washers, m5x10 or m5x14 screws with smallest head possible (personally prefer countersunk)
Deffo save on some cash
oh and absolutely DO NOT USE NYLON OR SPRUNG WASHERS !!!!
just clicked link and that kit if nylon washers which move when the CPU / GPU heats up, they need to be steel !

Not strictly true, it's not a warranty as such but the 6 year duty of care does give you rights to claim for faults. Obviously this doesnt apply if you spilt coke or anything like that over it but does cover for design/manufacture faults.

Also, Argos wont have to repair it for free, as said earlier you will be entitled to a repair at a reduced cost based on how long you've had the product.

Contact trading standards directly and also send a letter to MS saying you have done so (send it recorded delivery) and let that put the sh*ts up them.

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
Well I bit the bullet and fixed it myself with the £4 kit .. thanks for the link Menzo.

All working fine now ... touch wood.
