3M masking tape - Useage advise

A friend asked me to detail his car. I had read that you have to use 3M masking tape when using polishing but I am now stuck... how do I get a nice shine on the paint?

I have the 3M tape and hardly ever use it lol - would maybe explain why my mirror backing plates are black & white after a wash
