40mpg!

  182 has now gone!
so wen ur braking hard you use your gears to slow you down aswell and your off the acclerator so how can it be classed as coasting when your leaving it in gear and foot off the acclerator because that will slow you down so its engine braking

This is gonna go on for ever.. everyone has there own views and right and wrong ways on coasting so lets just leave it at that!!!!

Have you not read the topic of the thread bright spark?
Its about MPG and in my first post i simply gave a couple of tips to save fuel. Actually i distinctly recall you saying that they were good ideas..

Instead of braking hard at the last minute when approaching a junction or a give way sign you LIFT OFF the gas whilst IN GEAR and COAST to a stop.
The engine braking is a given!!!

God its not rocket science.

but I might just add..

what happens when you take your foot off the accelerator but the car is still in gear?....you slow down...the ENGINE is BRAKING for you...

40mpg is pretty impressive - my fiances 1.2 punto only manages 44 combined driving. I myself have never been above a combined 30 in mine on a 250 mile week - do boot it a bit but not excessivley.

Im not sure i trust those trip computers too much anyway. Has anyone ever compared recorded findings of a weekly fill to the read out when on a consistent long m-way run?

When work amended my milage allowance, cruise control at 58mph on empty motorways became the preferred option and mpg in excess of 40 entered my life for the first time.

  Shed.
i think there is something up with my car i have a 1.2 and i bearly get 43 on average.

probably because we have to rev the f**k out of them just to get them moving. I find myslef changin at about 3-3.5k even when im driving gently otherwise its like a snail.

actually if you drive them on a motorway at 60 and be gentle with the throttle youll get a better mpg.

i try not to look i went from driving a saxo vtr to a 172 cup and the difference in fuel economy is appauling however i do have a slightly heavy foot!
