52 Clio 172 Ignition problems...

  172
Hi,

I'm looking for some advice. I changed my spark plugs on my clio 172 at the weekend, when i put it all back together, it was only running on 3 cylinders!!

I have checked the spark plugs, they all look ok. I have tested each one and all the leads individually and they all seem to be working ok - although i did notice the spark was quite weak.

The coil which seemed to be problematic is number 1 as i unplugged this and it made no difference and it still ran on 3 cylinders.

If anyone has any ideas please help...

Thanks :D

Ryan

Could be a faulty coil pack if all else fails. Probably not though if it was okay before you changed the plugs.

id say coilpack tbh or leads in wrong position they should go from where the loom clip is that first lead nearest you should be number 1 then clockwise round 2,3 and 4

oh what plugs did you fit?

I fitted bosch plugs, just tried the old ones back on and that was worse tbh.

Its been miss-firing a little for a while, been a bit jumpy. Is it possible the coil pack has just went and is a coincidence that i had just changed the plugs?

Cheers

I had this exact same problem with my 172 Cup - exactly the same symptoms.

I fitted bosch super 4 plugs and the coil pack failed almost immediately. Im not sure of the cause, but its definitely related to the spark plugs (maybe difference in resistivity putting a greater load on the coilpack). Jaybee Renault told me not to fit anything other than the genuine spark plugs - they are not cheap but they last for 75k miles.

The coil pack cost me £52 quid from Renault.

Take your coilpack off (really easy) and check to see if it is cracked underneath. Mine appeared to have overheated and cracked as a result - not obvious unless you look really closely at the underside.

I managed to get a coil pack from a local dealer today for £41!

Fitted it with the original NGK plugs and for the first five mins it was running perfect, no missfires and really smooth.

I pulled into a side road to turn and while taking away infirst, it started to missfire quite badly, it was doing it in second and third gear also.

Before i changed the plugs originally, the car only slightly missfired in neutral and it didn't affect the driving of the car.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Should i try new NGK plugs and possibly leads?

Thanks

i say leads, mine had the same problem, when i tested the plugs on the leads each one had a spark but still only ran on 3, so i changed the pluge for new genuine ones and fitted magnecor leads and was then perfect
so im saying leads as it points out they are breaking up at some point on the lead, and driving is now causing that problem

I got a new coil from a local dealer for £41 so that was ok. I then put the old plugs back in to avoid the bosch ones then all the miss firing started again. I reckon i may need new NGK plugs as my ones have done 60k and i had them lying around the garage for a few days!
