53 plate 172 which gearbox

Anybody know what year they started to put the jc5 130 box into 172s.
I can get a gearbox out of a 53 plate just wondered what's the chances of it being a 130 with bolted diff????

Strongly doubt it’ll be a 130 with bolted in diff mate out of a 53 plate.

I think out of all the ones I’ve rebuilt, I’ve only ever seen 1 that was a 130 box in a late 172, and that was the original box.

If it has a speedo drive on the rear of the box, it is not a 130.

I spent 7 months last year trying to find a 129, and all the 53 plates were 130`s.

Mine is a 172 cup Sept 2003 (53) and it has a speedo drive as per your picture.

If you need to retain a speedo drive, you need a 129 or 089, on the assumption you want to replace a faulty box.

@NorthloopCup can convert these to bolt up diff if required.

It would be a good idea to clarify your situation and goals.

Also your budget.

Thanks for all the replys boys. I think the car did have cruise control that it came out of. My situation is my 129 has done the circlip in so was after a 130 box. I don't need the Speedo drive as mine is just a 172 ph2 which takes Speedo from abs

Majority of 172 take Speedo from the box not abs.

So to clarify matters, you have a late Ph2 172, that was built with a 130 box and the speedo drive is taken off the ABS, but someone has installed a 129 box, but

not utilised the speedo drive and now the circlip has gone pop?

Ideally, what you are looking for is an original 130 without the circlip and no speedo drive?

Sorry I did not take on board last night that Eddie555 had jumped the thread and I thought he was the OP.

If your car was built with a box with a circlip, then you need another 129 or 089, and the speedo is not driven from the ABS.

You can add another one to that count if you like mate, my 53 plate 172 has always ran a 130
