A Foray Into Bangernomics

Alright, I’m slightly over budget for full bangernomics status, but this is by far the cheapest car I’ve ever bought.

The car itself...

Purchased blind (and slightly intoxicated) for £1900 off ebay. Slight background to the purchase is that I’m currently based on a site 4 miles from home and could well be for some years, the wife had an Audi A1 that had been ruined by an emissions recall, and I had a brand new Seat Leon FR as a daily. The end game is that the mrs is now pregnant, the A1 popped off to WeBuyAnyCar, she got the Seat and I needed a ‘banger’ for work.

Saw an advert for this which was well written and on the surface seemed like a well cared for car. The result being it is now stands on my drive with the following:

2.0t manual
2 previous owners (mother and son)
135,000 miles
Full saab/specialist service history (every year on the button)
MOT until november
£1700 spent on it just before xmas on a full service discs/pads etc.

Spec:
Leather
Cruise
Climate
Xenons
2 stage heated seats

In short, i love it. Not a rattle/knock/squeek anywhere, quiet as a mouse on tickover, pulls hard, clutch seems spot on. Gearbox is clunky but its a GM unit and internet concencus seems to think they are all the same. Is slightly better when warmed up. 210bhp but isn’t what i’d call fast in any sense of the word. It’s no slouch but you can tell its a heavy car. Fuel consumption isn’t great, around 25mpg average for far but i’m doing 8 miles a day so don’t care.

I’ve spent abit of team cleaning the inside up, but other than that it still stands from the original advert pics above. I’ve only took one picture of it:

Plans are to drive it. Needs a decent laser alignment as it pulls like a dog at the minute. Needs a front tire soon also but other than that I’m hoping for some trouble free motoring.

It’s the first car I’ve ever owned that I genuinely don’t give a sh*t about and its great!

Seats in that picture are shoved all the way back, but even in my position leg room isn’t amazing. I think it flatters to decieve in the space department. More than adequate for me but for an estate I wouldn’t call it big.

Heated seats where the one thing mine was missing.
Looks great, nice that it's a facelift.

Rear legroom, well, we realised it's the opposite of a tardis!

Think I saw this on ebay too. Has it had a dodgy repair, like a crap respray on one of the panels?

Still a lot of car for the money!

Everything seemed cosher when i looked over it. It’s hpi clear etc and I saw no evodence of a dodgy repair. Admittedly its been covered in crap since day 1 and I haven’t washed it and nor do I have any plans to. I’ll let you know once I do though.

Nothing wrong with that, it actually looks quite nice.
If I hadn't moved house and kept spending money and instead got a lease this could have been my civic on your drive.
Maybe next time lol

I still hanker for an FN2. Keep me in the loop when/if you do end up putting yours up for sale.

I will mate no probs. Its just sat on the drive now. Be lucky if its doing 20 mile a week.
Just all the money we get now goes on the house and home hub lol
It will level out in time im sure.

May have been a different one.

Either way enjoy it. Its great having a car you don't particularly care about. I bought a V40 around a year and I've not washed it since I bought it.

I’d take the gearbox out my Saab over a Clio’s anyday! Enjoy it and welcome to being amping the group of the most intelligent drivers on the road. TopGears words, not mine!

Must admit, I drive my Dad's TTID Saab 93 saloon quite regularly and have recently done a 7 hour round trip it in. Can't fault it at all. Great cars for the value of them!

Noobtune should see a nice increase

Do it! So cheap too for great gains. From what I remember it's less than £100 too.

Saab B207R (9-3 Aero). Stock = 210hp and 310nm of torque.
Stage 1. Remap only = 250hp and 370nm.

Still got this. Done 10,000 miles now as been moved to a site 35 miles away. 4 miles of b road and 31 miles of motorway and it is averaging 36mpg according to trip computer. Haven’t worked it out properly but I’m getting 425 miles to £60.

Needs a bit of tlc after lockdown. Got advisories on the last MOT for track rod ends, wasn’t knocking so left it. That was in November though and now the front end sounds like its ready to fall off. Other than that, still faultless. Also still mildly amusing to drive as anything with a turbo can be. Will be staying with me until it dies.

Picture of its last wash at the beginning of January.

I do like the look of these, always wondered why they didn't go RWD with them. That would look great going sideways on a roundabout

Mentioned it in another thread but they look great for a 12 year old car!

Looks fantastic clean, really nice looking cars. Not something I've ever wanted, but something I've always thought looked nice.

Granted I don’t take many pictures of my old saab but this is the most a few month back. Cleans up well. Probably the best £1900 ive ever spent. Closing in on 150,000 now and bar a few suspension bits that need attention the engine is strong as ever. 70-90 in 6th it pulls like a train. Suprises quite a few cars.
