A little confused! (Renault numbering)

Hey, guys!

Simple question; how does the Renault numbering work.. like i have a clio mk2 is that number 19, 20 or 21? does it go solely on the make of the car, by the year or something Renault started years ago and are now just counting up each model :S

Say you googled Clio 21 or clio 20 you'd get a different mk car, does the number mean anything apart from the fact it's counting up each model?

Oh, they add Phase's within a mk as well, which adds to the overall number Thanks, confusion solved!

Well heres a belated thank you to theduck!
I've used it plenty of times to explain the differences to people who don't notice the difference in clio's.
