A new whining noise....

  PH1 172 Sport
Once the engine has heated up I get a whining noise above about 2k rpm.

Its really starting to annoy me now. Ive also had a whistling noise between 1k and 2k rpm for a while now. I was thinking maybe the alternator bearing or water pump bearing?? I'm hoping its not a cambelt tensioner! Whats the easiest way to pinpoint the problem?

The car had the cambelt and tensioners changed 2 years and 30k ago and had a new aux belt, tensioner and pully about 6k ago.

Could very well be the tensioner for the aux belt is too tight.

The slight whistling at LOW revs is likely to cambelt, the whining noise is more than likely aux belt tensioner/s. You have 1 years parts warranty on renualt items, so take it to the garage and get them to check it over.

Why would the tension suddenly be too tight after 3 months of driving though?

Anyone heard of the aux belt pulley wheel not lasting very long?

Might of already been tight, and gradually the pressure on the bearing has progressivley worsened. Either way its only done 6k, take it back and get it checked out, it can be costly if u dont

I changed it myself so have nowhere to take it back too. Its going to rentec on tuesday so ill see what they say. Thanks for the help. Have they been known to have to much tension on the spring before?

Mine did the very same thing believe it or not. Had a wine between 1-2k and another one above 4.5k

I do believe you just never heard of it being a problem before but it does make sense. Can't believe they cant even manufacture the tensioners the same!!

I just had a similar problem with mine if you want to
remove the alternator from the list. Start the car let
it warm up wait for the noise to start get an 8 to 10"
screwdriver place the tip on your alt and place the
top of the handle against your ear. You will then be
able to tell if your alt bearing has gone to make
double sure rev the engine slightly while still having
the screwdriver to your ear try it in a few place as
well.
