ABS Ring

  Bus Winker
Can I get an ABS ring without buying new brakes?

I think I've cracked mine on the rear passenger brakes and could do with getting it fixed rather than getting a new set of brakes.

If this is possible can anyone point me in the right direction for one?

  Bus Winker
I can't see the rear abs ring at all, it looks like I'll need to remove the wheel.

In the meantime I've ordered a ring for £1.99 which will apparently fit so not much harm if it doesn't.

Does anyone have any guides on how to fit these?

I changed my abs ring it was straight forward tap off then tap the new one back on, I heated the new abs ring up before fitting, but I'm not sure if that helped.
just keep it square and work it back on.

Do you know of a guide for removing the brake to get at the abs ring?

Just checked my ABS rings and the rear ones look fine. However, the front driver side ABS ring looks like the below image.

I'm guessing this is cracked and will be causing the ABS to kick in?

Yes.

That size crack often doesn't bring up an ABS fault, but you will feel the ABS kicking in very lightly at very low speed (e.g. braking will be fine down to say 10 mph and then the pedal will have the classic ABS feel)

TBH I would have thought you'd have noticed this happening? Particularly under very light braking (e.g. stop start traffic)

You can verify it's the ABS as opposed to another issue (e.g. binding discs could feel similar) by pulling the ABS fuse and driving around the block. Be sensible though. You only need to try the brakes normally not emergency stops etc - pulling the ABS fuse will give you a 50:50 brake bias and so the rears will lock relatively easily if you emergency stop etc.

Is you're a FF? That ABS ring looks like the narrower non-cup-pack size. The cup pack cars have a wider (approx. 15mm maybe?) ABS ring than the non-cup-packed cars. Unfortunately the ABS rings are about £15 as opposed to £4 for the non-cup ABS ring. Not to get ahead of my/yourself, but the wrong ABS ring is a sign of either: the wrong one being fitted in error or having non-cup drive shafts fitted to a cup pack car in error by a garage/person that doesn't know the difference.

Supposedly fitting the narrower ring to a cup pack cars gives the ABS sensor trouble in picking up a signal.

Thanks for the confirmation. Yeah I've been noticing exactly what you have explained so I'm going to get it took to the garage to fit a new one next week.

Mine isn't a FF so that should be the cheaper one? Do you have a link to the right part on eBay so I know I've definitely got the right one?

I got mine from here. Only because they were the only place that seemed to do the wider cup version that I needed.

The non cup one looks a bit expensive compared to what's been said about ebay prices (though I've had a quick look and can't find any [I/]front[/I] ABS rings for less than £10.) I don't know if any old Renault 44 tooth ring will fit or if the diameter is different due to Renaultsport drive shafts vs non sport.

Whichever way you look at it ukpartsdirect.com's item listed specifically for "non cup 182" is more reassuring than eBay's one ABS ring that claims to fit a billion Clios on the basis that "yeah 2.0L sport is probably same as 1.2 mate."

Thanks, the non cup ABS ring looks the same as the one I got off eBay but I think I'll just take it to the garage and let them deal with it. I need new discs and pads anyway (see image below) so I may as well get it all done at the same time.

There are an alarming number of people on here who have had non-OEM bearings fail after only a few months.

Adam @ Renault Wolverhampton does a pair of discs including pads, ABS rings and bearings pre-fitted for £100 give or take a few pounds. It's about £90 if you don't want the pads.

Even before you think about quality of bearings it's pretty damn good value for money.

I'm struggling to find anything on eBay that says OEM.

I've found these but I'm not sure if it's OEM?

OEM discs were Renault's own rears and Brembo fronts as far as I know from a few years of reading CS :p OEM pads are Brembo all round. It's the bearings to watch out for though.

Adam @ Wolverhampton is the UK distribution centre that sends stock to dealerships, garages, random ebay traders etc. You simply are not going to get OEM bits cheaper than Adam unless people buy their stock from Adam and then sell it on ebay at a loss lol.

Renault Wolverhampton: 0844 558 8799. Only speak to Adam Greenhouse. If you're looking at ebay cause you want them quickly... well then no-one's going to dispatch them on Sunday anyway and Adam can usually offer very fast and very cheap postage.

As I said, rear discs and pads are £99 inc. VAT as of this week (http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?735046-Parts-Order&p=10140338&viewfull=1#post10140338)

To avoid CS.net exploding please please please insist that your garage is extra vigilant and removes the spacer which will no doubt be stuck to the old disc (or goes flying 20 feet if the disc is difficult to get off and needs some hammer action) and refit it with the new discs. If the spacer is lost, broken or non existent then again Adam is the cheapest. Part number is 6000073518. You'll need two of them.

If you're considering front discs too then the forum seems to prefer G172 (http://www.cliosport.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?147-G-172) for Brembo HC discs. If Adam & G172 are within a few £ on the front discs/pads then you may as well just buy the lot from Adam for the sake of simplicity/postage.

Back to spacers if I may. Unless it's a specialist they'll probably go "yeah yeah mate you can trust us we do clios all the time" and think you're a **** for telling them how to do they're job. But there is virtually nothing indicating that you need a spacer, it's very easy to miss as it'll be corroded onto the old disc and hidden with dirt and most cars don't need spacers between the disc and hub so why would the mechanic even be looking out for one?

Stop messing around and just buy them from Renault Wolverhampton lol! 0844 558 8799. Only speak to Adam Greenhouse.

Unless you're taking it to Mick/Fred/Dan/MWM/DTM etc. please insist that your garage reuses the little conical spacers from the old rear discs. They'll think you're a **** for telling them how to do their job but it's ridiculously easy to miss and very few cars have spacers so it's not as if they'd even be expecting them. The little spacers are essential. If they get lost, broken or aren't present then again Adam is the cheapest. Part number is 6000073518. About £7 each. You'll need two of them. Conical side faces the hub. Flat side faces the disc.

g172 your mailbox is full so I'm unable to PM you.

Am I right in thinking the below is what I need from you? Also, are these still the prices or have they gone up/down?

front Brembo oem pads £29
front Brembo HC discs £45
rear genuine Renault discs with bearings/abs rings £99
rear Brembo oem pads £22

Let me know and I'll sort the payment this week as I could do with them asap.

bit of a bump...

will missing spacers throw on the traction and serv light, what will the issue be without them, also is the rear ABS ring the same as the front ?

i had new rear brakes and discs fitted, now i can go through days of it not coming on or they will come on within a few miles. didnt have this issue before.
