Advice on N reg 16valve Clio

My mate is after buying a N reg 16 valve clio. The car is priced at about £3000 and looks to be in mint condition. (Only thing i could see was a couple of little ston chips). Its had two owners but the car has been round the clock. (Not sure on exact mileage).

Is there anything he should be looking for when checking over the car or were the 16vs quite good well built cars.

Is £3000 a good price.

The car does look very nice, lowered on its ass with original wheels on.

Cheers

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

100k is a far bit on a French engine IMO but if its been looked after sounds about right. My minter 16v may be for sale with 75k for around 4k though.

Sound a bit expensive to me. look on autotrader or in the for sale forum fo some minters with less milage for about the same price.

N reg was the last 16v they made.. so its going to be worth more because of that...

100k in that time tho is quite a lot, heh.

go for it mate but see if you can knock him to 2500. Valvers hold their mileage well but check for regualr oil changes, fuel filter change etc etc. Dont see why youll have any problems with it. Proably high mileage cos he liked driving the car! dont read too much into it cos a few people on here are a bit too proper and stiff upper lip, i.e it MUST have full renault service history and mobil one oil change every 5000miles blah blah blah. These valvers are not always the best and infact seem to have more problems. If its been looked after, its looks mint and history etc etc checks out then go for it.

Just got my M reg today £3100 78000 miles although it has a broken front wing (someone kicked it) and the brakes are a bit knackered - ABS light on and off and braking is also shakey - on off style, Ive bugdeted to rpair these though. I looked at an N reg with 67000 miles up for £2600 (£3200 in trader) bumber is wonky and pretty much avery panel in need of attention inc roof.

Another N reg up for £4000 had scratched all over, mis-aligned bumper and 2 dials not working - 80000 miles. part SH, I would have paid £3300 for it but Im no expert.

:Di got mine 2 months ago. im upto 87k and i payed £2300 for it on am m-plate. high mileage is not a problem aslong as it has been looked after. oil changes are a must but it is a good reliable engine. ask the seller about the miles. if its long motorway jaunts like mine was the engine will be fine. being able to get a feel for the seller is the best way of getting a good car. just talk to the seller about trivial stuff not related to the car and u will prob get an idea of how the car has been treated. clutch and gbox are not brill if its taken a lot of abuse on short town journeys. look at where the cars previos owners lived. if its in the city it will have more wear and tear than if it was out in the country with open roads around. my car is on orig box and clutch and there fine. mine has got a few probs round the front wheels i need to sort. listen for knocks and groans on corners and bumps. bodywork scuffs are cheap to repair if you have the time to do a good job yeourself.

end of the day if the seller seems a nice bloke/lass you should get a good motor :D

Im on 100,043 miles and my water pump is fine, cambelt is only £160 if it needs doing and these F7P engines seem to go on for ever. Have heard of plenty of F7P/R (16v/Williams) engines making it well past 250,000 miles with minimal bottom end wear. Just make sure its been loved and all will be good. Mileage is far less important than condition IMO: would far rather buy a loved 16v/Willy on 150k than an unloved one at 50k.

Well, it hit 100,000 miles as I left the petrol station this morning, so its easy to remember what miles its done!

plus ben is sooper anal about his valver, still....i guess there is a reason why its soooooper mint.....

I dont dare stand to close too it, you should of seen my trying to close the bonnet, dare not did i to slam it.....i was trying to persuade it in with cotton buds. lol

i can honestly say that the mileage is an issue to most people,

but if it has been cared for then it will be fine !

ive had mine for nearly a year and its on 86,000 was on 79,000 when i got it, its sweet the only thing is that the power steering pump is noisy,

to prove as well, i looked at a phase 2 L reg black one on only 22,000 up for £4,000

it only had one stamp in the book and was a dog ! clearly they couldnt be bothered.

mines an m reg totally standard with leather and cost £3650.from £4,000

Well i got mine about 6 months ago here are the details

N REG

Monanco BLue

61,000 Miles

MINT bodywork - apart from two TINY dents in the bonnet, and 1 parking ding (ie someones door into the panel)

to me - £3450, WHAT A BARGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  Not a Clio

Bought mine back in August/October

L reg on irsh plates, 3 owners... 1 in ireland and 2 in scotland

Bought with 80,000 on it

Cracked bumper which garage admitted to doin when parking and a faulty electric window, both of which were put right before i picked it up.

No service history or V5 as the garage had been broken into and everything stolen. Checked car over as best i could, test drive was fine, took my dad to see it the following day, hes had plenty of experience with cars, he wasnt overly keen.... not his type of thing but he reckond it was sound.

Bought it for £3000, wouldnt budge on price, only managed to get £1200 part ex on my M reg Clio 1.2 with 60,000 on it

I now have reciepts for over £2000s worth of repairs!
You name it... i think ive had it replaced

If i didnt love that car with a passion I would have sold it on a few months after buying but now its running sweet as and Im well happy.

When i get home Ill add a list of things replaced since buying, that way you can bear them in mind when looking at valvers.

Probably worth getting an AA/RAC check or taking along someone who knows what to look for.

btw... nothing more embarresing than a gear box mount sheering off! That was one cold night in winter waiting for an AA tow truck I can tell you.

Well cambelt changes are 72k or every five years. If youre doing the belt you may as well stick a new water pump in there, save yourself some time when it finally does go.
