Advice please: Noise/tapping from engine!

Hi there

I have had the car for about 2 months now and I've noticed there is something like a tapping noise from the left hand side of the engine block ie. where all the belts are. I've had a retired mechanic to had a quick look at it but as its so cramped in there he said the engine needs to be lower/lifted to inspect it properly and not something he could do due to his bad back.

Anyway, after searching through the forum it looks like it might be the dephaser pulley/aux belt. I'm worried I will cause more damage to the engine if I continue to drive it so have booked it in at one of my local garages to have it looked at properly.

What I want to know is if it is the dephaser pulley/aux belt, how much am I looking to pay? and would you advise to get the cambelt changed at the same time? I have a invoice when I got the car to say it was last changed at in Jan 2009 at 46.5k its now coming to 66k so its done around 20k.

Thanks in advance!

Definitely get the cambelt done at the same time, Around the 500-600 mark if it got aircon etc, about 400 if it doesnt, If i was you id take it to a local specialist who will have the right tools ;)

Thanks guys, so you guys would recommend getting the cambelt at the same time?

I understand its best to get a specialist to do it but I'm based in South East Kent and not sure who's is the nearest.

I would imagine the any specialist will be a good hour & half away and will it be safe to travel all that way?

Cheers

yeah you might as well as it will save money in the long run mate

not sure who is closest to you, but taking it to just any garage who hasn't worked on these engines before can cost you a fortune as it wont be done correctly

I understand what you are saying.

What are people opinions with changing the aux belt & dephaser pulley?

Is it as complicated as changing the cambelt? Reason I'm asking is looking at the servicing schedule it recommends you to change the aux belt every 3 years/36k or there abouts. I'm thinking would it be ok to get my local garage to change the aux belt etc and when the cambelt is due which is in 3 years cos theres no way I will do over 50k in that time the auxbelt will be due to be changed again & I can take it to 519 automotive.

Thanks Jack

They are slightly closer. I've left my car at my local garage cos I didn't want to drive it anymore in case I cause more damages, they will contact me before carrying out what is wrong so will see what they say first.
