Hello,

My cars is in the body repair shop atm after a bit of an accident.
The bloke said he would spray my side, front and back bumpers for free after i asked him how much it would cost to colour code, This is without sanding down untill they are smooth.

Has anyone had this done without having a smooth surface sprayed??
If so can you post a few pics so i can see what its like?

Also what are your views on this and what do you reccommend me doing?

I may just pay a bit extra and get him to use some fine filler before spraying them or i could just sand the surface myself.... This would mean some help from you guys if possible ?

From what i've heard, using the amount of "back to black" etc that people do on bumpers the paint won't stick unless it is sanded, but this information could not be 100% facual. :rasp:

Well what do i do to sand the bumpers down half decently?

Would the fine filler idea work?? Iv only seen one mention of this after reading old posts..... many old posts!

New paint wont stick to old paint properly. The surface needs to have a key which is normally done with a scotch pad. Any painter will know this. If you mean painting the bits that are currently black plastic then it will deffo need sanding and priming. You can get away without sanding but it will look gash but without a primer the paint wont stick.

Not worth him doing it unless he's gonna prepare the surface properly, as will chip and look s**t in no time at all.

Sounds like the sprayer doesnt know what he's talking about... you trust him to spray your car??

It will have the primer and wotever else goes before and after the spraying process. The bumpers just wont be sanded down.

As for trusting him, hes never done any work on my car but has to alot of my familys and they think hes the best i can go to for the repair and spraying.

he'll just give them a sand down with a scotchbrite to give the paint something to key to. he'll probably use either plastic primer or scanseal then paint on top of that.

they will be colour coded but they wont be the same colour as your car, they will be like darker/dirtier.

for perfect match they need to be filled with high build 2k primer and sprayed as normal

As said, if its not sanded down properly, then primed, sanded, the paint will not stick and will come off in no time.

If your going to do a job do it properly, will only de-value your car more.

Think my best option is to wait 'til i got enough cash to get it done properly now.

My old bump strips were ok. I didn't spray them but I they certainly hadn't been sanded down. Looked constantly coated with back to black which was a good thing I guess. Paint didn't peel.

When you say you didnt spray them do you mean someone else did or they just havnt been sprayed at all and you have done something else lol??

it doesnt get "filled" with filler as what i think youre going on about.

a "proper" job will be

-sand plastic
-plastic prime plastic
-lots of high build 2k primer
-sand primer
-basecoat
-laquer


i reckon what he will be doing is

-sand plastic
-plastic prime or scanseal
-basecoat
-laquer

meaning it will still be textured, but colour coded
