Alloys refurb - Help needed!

  172
Hi guys. Just signed up as a member for cliosport! Basically I've just got a new set alloys for my 1.2, as my car has some 17's on atm which look s**te. I decided on buying some Renault 5 16' lenso concept 5 alloys (like the RS5's), which are a bit worse for wear. Anyway I've looked at a few guides on the internet on how to do a home refurb for alloys, and I've bought most of the things I'll need to do a refurb. Starting sanding down the lip of one of the alloys yesterday and the lip is now black/grey. Does that mean I've reached bare metal and I'm now ready to prime? Might sound like a stupid question but I'd rather get this refurb done right the first time haha. I've been using p120 wet and dry sandpaper.

Also been trying to upload pics to explain what I mean, but having trouble lol. Its saying the files are too large. Hope you guys can help anyway! Cheers, Jack.

the black s**t round the rim is the undercoat layer from powder coating, you will have a hard time getting it all off just with sand paper, you can sand it and primer then paint but you wont get as good a finish.

Thanks for the help! Just got through the black coat in a little section, down to the bare metal now. Cant see me being able to do this 4 times over lol. What have I got myself into!

Yeah good thinking. Read some stuff about nitromors, but would probably have to have the tires removed at a garage. Reckon thats my cheapest/easiest option though. Would get them sandblasted but don't want to splash to much cash. Cheers

yeah will help. i would say though its hardly worth doing them yourself judging from when i did mine i still spent a fair wack on spray cans and although the finish might be good it wont be any where near durable enough if you use halfords laquer etc. it might be worth just waiting and saving up abit more and getting it done professional. i just spent 47 pound a wheel getting mine done and its well worth it considering they gaurantee it for a year etc.
