Alternator Bearing

Anyone had one of these go? If so what does it sound like when its on its way out? The engine started making a funny sort of squeaky grinding noise today and seems to be coming from about the alternator/water pump. Any ideas?

It went on our Megane a couple of weeks ago, but with very little warning. Get it checked. If it goes completely youll have no electrics and no power steering!

Just hope it is only the alternator.
