Alternator Grief

My car died yesterday when the alternator failed (with only about 5 miles warning from when the red light came on).

Looking under the bonnet, one of the connections from the alternator and the first 3-4 inches of the wire has melted.

Can this wire be repaired or does the whole of the engine loom need to be replaced? - as the Renault dealer is claiming, with a quote of over £1000 for the work!

Any ideas? Cheers

Not the same fault but...

Ive just had an alternator and tensioner changed to the tune of £560.82 :(
