Alternator - On its way out

On start up im getting a ticking noise which i think is the alternator, plus my battery keeps going flat, i checked that, and it did need topping up but didnt seem to help much. The wiring seems ok. How do i test the alternator, and how much would i be looking to pay to get a new one fitted, is it too hard for a DIY job? Looks a bit complicated.

The same happened on mine about this time last year - the battery light was on all the time eevn when driving. Got a new one fitted at a garage that specialise in auto - electrical and sports cars.

Think alternators are an exchange unit only, and involves taking off the bonnet, wing, headlight etc....labour intensive - cost me about £140 i think fitted - about £70 of it was labour - pain in the a$$ to do, couldnt do it myself...good luck!

Oh, and if you take it to a local auto electrician/garage, theyll be able to test it to see if it is the alternator - just takes 2 secs...

if uve got a multimeter put it across the battery wiv engine running it should be about 14.5 volts (you might need some1 to raise the revs a bit)

switch on all electrical appliences stereo , heated screen , lights e.t.c the voltage shouldnt drop below 13volts

if its ok your batt is prob knacked

Id take it to a reputable auto-electricial place and get them to do a check on it for you - have a look for one in your local autotrader, or if you know someone that has been to one, ask what they think..

U have a Naples red clio? metallic? same ere!

cse - u got me worried - hope i didnt get a cheap job

thats gonna go wrong again soon...been ok for the last year tho..

I know a good auto electric place, they can take a while to do jobs but its reasonable prices, and good quality.

My alternator went last week, £83 fitted including VAT!!

(That was on a 19 16V though, maybe less labour to get the alternator out/in?)
