Alternator replacement help needed to adjust position - aux belt issue

  03 clio sport asc
Hey guys

Recently changed my alternator and aux belt but don’t like the how close the tensioner is to the belt. Is the actual alternator able to be adjusted to make a little bit more room for the belt the area that is super close is where the pulley is next to the tensioner. I used the jubilee trick to tension the belt.

If it is able to be adjusted please tell me what I need to do as a little lost it seems it’s all mounted super solid. I haven’t touched the power steering or Ac compressor. So what’s the trick?!

I did check a mates clio his was not as close and my other Clio has loads of room

Thanks heaps

David

It’s pretty bad thank god I caught it in time. Car hasn’t been driven since discovering this:

Belt is rubbing on something there.

Lol sure is but have done couple of thousand kms and a track day since i change the alternator and it was always pretty close did leave a tiny indentation from the start and had a mechanic look at it and was told not to worry about...hence why I really hate mechanics!!

Any other theories? Just fitted my BC coil overs today and want to fix ASAP and dont really wanna go to all the trouble of fitting a new belt and have the same issue

Ok will pick one up tomorrow, with the jubilee trick just wrap it around the tensioner till it’s basically closed, install the belt then loosen off and remove the jubilee? Or if some can explain how to modify a extension bar and use that? Do you just grind the end down to fit then you can leaver it somehow?

Jubilee is fine mate, used it loads of times. It goes above and below the 2 small torx bolts from your first pic, tighten up till the belt is free enough to remove and then remove the tensioner, it's got a large Allen headed bolt in the middle you will need to access and that torx bolt pictured.

Or just snip the belt to save 10 minutes as you get a new belt in the kit anyway.

Spoke to another Renault shop he believes the alternator may have had a bigger pulley on it then the original I think that’s crap as it was looking identical to the one I replaced my new theory is the belt is non genuine and is quite a bit taller then a genuine one, has any one came across this issue or compared between belts and noticed a difference in thickness?

Why not just buy an aux kit and change the belt and tensioner?

You have the typical symptoms of a duff tensioner. There's not much else which could be causing it

Only reason I haven’t pulled the pin on that is because I spoke with two Renault shops one suggested the actual alternator maybe wrong size and the other didn’t have any tensioners in stock and wanted to sell me a 2nd hand. Dealer wants $300 for the kit which is a bit much unless I’m sure that’s the issue I still think belts different thickness I’ll measure tonight and post back

Wow, what country are you in?

The aux belt kit in the UK is only £80. Maybe see if you can import one from the UK?

Take the alternator off and see if you can get a part number off it that should confirm if it's correct or not.

Just an update new aux kit is all on and no more rubbing has loads of room between belt and pulley. Cost about $300aud from Renault Australia with trade pricing. Took me half the day and lots of head scratching and did it with bumper on and the jubilee clip trick as of course the tensioner tool I purchased didn’t had the right fitting. Just checked the mrs 225 though and even know a Renault specialist just did the timing belt there is where on the outside of the belt so looks like it’s not something they normally change.
2 of our best Renault specialists have told me they just do a visual inspection when they change belts and very rarely change the tensioners my guess is this is why so many people experience belts snapping. One of the garages i spoke with said they actually rebuild the tensioners and could sell me a new spring. Anyone know about this ?

Aux belt kit is £78 GBP here.

Have you asked RPD if they ship to Australia, It`s not that expensive.

Oops, that half a day would probably have been 2 hours if you'd took the bumper and slam panel off!

Slam panel and top grill was well off, half day may be exaggerated but defiantly not a walk in the park coming from my regular office job to master mechanic
