ALTNATOR FIRE HELP AND ADVICE ?

Hi recently had a altnator fail just stoped working replaced it with a used altnator for a good price from a renault specialist in accrington its been on little than a week and its gone , it started smelling them was billowing with smoke , opened the bonnet and it was glowing red and a small little flame from there ,

Not had any problems with the trophy but can anyone sugest what may be the problem or is it just bad luck ?
Just cant think of anything that may cause it or any under lying problems ? , its well maintained and always has money spent on it.


Nerly had a heart fail once smoke poured out ...

Any help would be appricated ..

Must be a bearing for the pulley I'd say or something along those lines. Must have seized

And caused it to over heat and started heating the carbon and the plastic on the altnator casing ? Just my luck , see if anyone else has had any simlar problems cant see any ?

I have had an alternator overheat and read of several others on here previously (one even resulted in the car going on fire), it seems to be a common failure and given that you replaced the original one with a used unit I would say you were just unlucky.

My 182 did the same although not quite as hot. They get an internal short in the windings.

2 in a row is bad luck, but for me second hand alternators have always been trouble, same with starter motors.

I personally wouldn't buy anything from that place in Accrington, everything I've had from there in the past has been poor to be honest. Maybe I was unlucky but you try taking anything back to them!

Bad luck on your part! But i honestly struggle to get my head around why you would buy a secondhand alternator for a trophy?!?!

I would buy a secondhand alt for my scabby pug, but it's only worth 50p!!

Trying to save a few quid could of ended up with losing the car all together!

apart from buying a second hand alternator

buy new - 12months warranty!

To be fair it was off a 22,000 mile old car so didnt suspsect that but then again how long had the car been sat there , Ive never skimped really on the car but £230 vs £50 and looked good condition , Will all be sorted very soon i hope.

Bought my alternator used, off 172 ben, i believe you had fit it about 9 months before i bought it so if it goes wrong

Yeh he did lol, apparently renault wouldn't pay out because of the mods but some kind souls helped him out
