Always Wondered... [Exhaust Question]

I've always wondered this but never researched into it, or the price;

Can you fit an after market exahust/further boxes to a Diesel, hence to make it sound like a petrol or sound throaty?

look at the Audi diesel Le mans car, you can barely hear it when it flys past at 200mph apparently

You cna fit aftermarket exhaust to make them a bit noiser yep they won't sounds like a petrol due to the way they are plus the turbo muffles them.

Cool. I had no idea the Audi R8 was a diesel?
You can have mufflers changed too can't you?

So for instance, a Golf GTiTDi [Just an example], you could fit an exhaust to this that would make it sound like a non tractor, but it would obv affect the MPG and economy?
