Already posted in a few other places, but would like your expert advice too :)
Im going to have a bit of a rant now.

I bought my Clio 172 from a Ford main dealer (Inchcape Wokingham) on 1st March. I paid £6999 for it. I p/xd my old punto and paid a deposit. They gave me the remainder on 0% finance. The car itself was exactly what I was looking for. Sept 01 registered on a 51 plate with 17k miles. The bodywork is flawless, with no stone chips at all. In my haste to get shot of the punto, which was becoming a burden due to all the problems it had, so I bought the car.

Now, the day I picked up the car I noticed the stereo wouldnt work properly and the display wasnt showing. The plastic pin to stop the seatbelt clip from falling down was also missing, the drivers seat is slightly loose and I am able to rock it back and forwards ever so slightly, there was a small chip in the windscreen which the dealer said he would repair and he didnt and the drivers seatbelt is extremely slack when it retracts. You may think I am nit picking but these minor problems were beginning to irritate me. So I booked it back in with them to sort out.

This was last thursday. They phoned me up on friday to tell me the windscreen was fixed and they were going to send it to Renault Maidenhead to sort out the other problems. So I left it with them until today when I picked it up.

Now, when I picked it up it was very clean and shiny, but as soon as I got in, I noticed they hadnt done the seatbelt. I turned the stereo on and it was working ok, except the steering wheel control column was practically hanging out of its socket. Then I saw that the chip in the windscreen was still there. So I took it for a drive and noticed there were a lot more squeaks and rattles than I remember. I turned the stereo on and a random eminem CD started playing. Seeing as I dont own any eminem I thought this was strange so I went to eject it, but nothing happened. I tried a few times and then it dawned on me.....there is a cd changer under the passenger seat that I never noticed and someone had left the cd in there...doh! This has angered me even more because I remember someone mentioning that only imports come with the cd changer. When I got out I moved the drivers seat back and it was a tough job...the trim round the door deals had been taken off and not put back properly, and there are several bits of broken off plastic strewn around the trim.

To sum up....the garage have not done what they said they were going to do, and have handed me back my car in a bad condition with parts falling off here and there. I now think my car is an import and Im worrying about how much this is going to affect its resale value seeing as I paid a fairly high price for it anyway.

Looking back, I trusted the garage too much, as I did not have my own hpi report done....this was very stupid of me, as I saw their signs saying their cars were hpi checked, etc.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I proceed....my car has lost its sparkle now

Has the car got locking wheel nuts, a renault alarm and etched windows?

If so it's not an import.

Ignore what you were told about the cd changer, it's incorrect.

Just had a look. It has "Renault Sekurit" written on there with a few numbers at the bottom, and it also has Sait Gobain written on there too (glass manufacturer).
Im not sure about the alarm. It has a key fob and a red flashing led in the centre of the display when I lock it.
As for locking wheel nuts, there is a key packed with the spare wheel that takes off the front plate to get to the wheelnuts, but there are no actual locking nuts holding the wheel in.

Well im just in the process of buying a 172 which ive been told could well be a import, so i would be interested to know what kind of probs ill have when it come to resale etc as well.

Being an import makes it worth slightly less is my understanding.

I did a similar thing, bought from a dealer, didn't realise it was an import and found out later. You'd have to tell your insurance just in case - mine (direct line) didn't seem to care.

The things you don't get are the locking wheel nuts and alarm.

You'll find the rattles are things you just have to get used to - it's a Renault!

As for the other things, take it back and complain! And next time you pick it up check it all over before you drive away and if there is anything slightly wrong go straight back in and complain! Keep doing so until they fix it.

All 172s came with the 6 cd changer untill cruise control replaced it.
The Mk2 phase2 's had it removed as a cost saving it became an option which most people took up it was a way of increasing price whilsts not seemingly doing so.

51 plate would have had it as standard. Cost saving came in some time afterwards.

Correct, I've got a renault brochure stating the 6 disc changer as a standard item.

Does the car have a little LED next to the gear stick? Also does it have sensors at the top of each door pillar? If so, it not an import.

I'd kick up a major fuss, because you gave them your trust, and they took the piss. Keep complaining til they make it perfect for you.

Tyson.

It doesnt have an alarm or LED, but there is the gearstick light on the dash next to the speedo that lights up green when it hits the redline.

I went to the garage yesterday and had words. I asked to see the HPI report and they gave me a 1 page copy of the experian gold report. It looked ok, but (this was my mistake for not getting one in the first place as I put too much trust in the dealer) I will get a proper HPI report myself.
Then I asked the question "I want to know if this car is an import, and if so, where is the SVA certificate". At this point the manager overheard and came over trying to exert himself on me saying "yes sir, this vehicle is an import that came through a Renault garage from brand new and you only need the SVA when you are registering it for the 1st time".

Is this true? Im not really that bothered about it being an import, but I really want to get the HPI report so I can see the entire history. Does anyone know how less it is worth when it is an import? I dont understand why it should be worth less :(

As Tyson says does it have these on the car ? If not its an import. To be honest I don't think its worth that much less than a normal 172 (£500 max), but the garage misrepresented the car when they sold it to you and they should at least sort out the problems that are still there and I would say give you a free 24k service. Also if its an import the Renault warrenty isn't 3 years, how much did they give you or was it already expired ?

Hi, It doesnt have the sensors. Its 4.5 years old now, so the renault warranty is long gone. the garage gave me a 3 month warranty that is very comprehensive. Im thinking of writing a letter to a higher level of management, just to say that I was unhappy with being misinformed about the car. £500 max isnt that bad. Im happy with it so I guess thats the main thing. If you saw it you wouldnt think its 4.5 yeard old :D
