Another 172 cup, rear brake question

  A4 Avant & A3
The story goes...

A week or so ago when braking i can hear a kind of grinding noise.. .
The rear brake discs have been rusty for what seems like ever. Although it sounded like the grinding was coming from the front discs.
I had a look at the pads (just from looking through the wheel spokes) and they have plenty of meat left on them.

I have been meaning to get the tracking done on it for a while, & the mrs had the day off today so i left her with the car to get it done for me & told her to get the garage just to have a quick look at the (inside) brake pads when they have it up on a ramp.
Turns out the front brake pads are fine (as i thought) but they reckon it's the rear brakes making the noise & that i need new discs & pads on the back!!

The car has done just over 12k miles, and from hearing the stories of the 'cup' not really using rear brakes i'm a bit confused as to why they are so worn? plus the discs need replacing too!

Just wondering if anyone else has had this with theirs? & i take it this is a warranty issue? as they shouldn't be gone this soon surely.

Gonna be ringing the boys & renault tomorrow, just wanted to know if this is a common thing.

and whats the betting Renault say "sir you're missing your rear compensator valve, it'll be £300 to replace"

bet you £1!

I'll let you know ;-)
Don't think i like my chances of winning that bet mind you!

I'm banking on them being really helpful & replacing the discs & pads... whats my chances ...!?

It's amazing how a car that hardly uses rear brakes (and the permanent rust on rear discs proves that!).... has worn the rear out before the front??? Hmmmmm

That would be good mate, thanks for that.. some ammo :)

I think i will get the rear wheels off & take a look for myself on the weekend aswell, see what it's all about before dropping it off.

I'll be ringing to book it in tomorrow.. wish me luck..
To be fair though, with my last clio (a year or so ago) the dealer i went to were actually pretty good with whatever i threw at them regarding warranty issues. So i might be lucky.

If worst comes to worst, anyone got a guestimate price for rear discs & pads?

New rear discs and pads? After 12k miles?

I'm on 54k miles now, which has included more than a few hard trackdays, and I'm still on original rear discs.

Unless yours came with plasticine rear discs, they're truly taking the piss.

Thats good to know MarkCup.. i was pretty sure 12k wasn't very much for rear disc & pads!!!! especially as it's never seen a track & i don't drive it particularily hard..

I'll see what they say tomorrow after giving them a ring.
