Anyone fit 172 cambelt DIY or by non-Renault garage?

Anyone fit 172 cambelt DIY or by non-Renault garage? People said there is a special tool for the cambelt change. What is that? Pics? Can we use something else?

How much does it cost from Renault to do this job? Included water bump right?

had mine done not too long ago at a Renault dealer, took them a day and a half, cost me about £350. I was advised to have the pump changed, so I did, turns out that the cambelt doesn't drive the pump, it's driven by the auxiliary belt....nice. Asked them to change the auxiliary belt, because it has too come off anyway, when I eventually picked it up, they told me that they couldn't get one, so it wasn't changed, not even a phone call, so if I take it back to get it done, another 1 1/2 hours labour. What a bunch of muppets !

i would ALWAYS recommend changing the aux belt

the cam locking tools are available from Renault and not that expensive

Principles of changing the cambelt is the same as on any other engine.

I always get a garage to do it just to be on the safe side...work guranteed so if it does snap/slip there is some comeback.

I suppose it does depend on the age of the car and how long your thinking of keeping it for

I wouldnt trust a garage who doesnt specialise or have the tools required...ESPECIALLY garages in Hong Kong, they are crap.

Tools required are

MOT. 1496
MOT. 1509
MOT 1509-01

Optional TDC setting tool MOT. 1054, if they cant accurately (and this is super duper important) find tdc.

My accessory belt and tensioners were changed at 36k - I'm gonna get my cambelt done at 60k - should I get it replaced again??

I would say cambelt changing is similar to many cars, except how many parts you need to remove when fit.

Would love to see how special the tool are, does anyone has a pic??
My garage's friend is able to make some DIY tool.

dont make DIY tools, setting of the camshafts on this engine is probably one of the most important things, you certainly dont even want to get it a degree out if you can help it.

i know mines not a 172, but i did mine myself...it was very easy to do, and if the belt snaps its still covered by the belt manufacture warrenty.

Heard people mentioning this but very sceptical about Renault honouring a warantee on a belt if you fitted it yourself.

Be interested to hear if they have though.
