If the belt doesnt snap before you get to 70k id be gobsmacked. Cambelts wear through age as much as use tbh.

I was in my renault the other wk and there was an iceburg phase 1 172 w reg on 70 odd thousand miles and they told me the woman that owned it originally had never had any belts done on it.

You can get lucky or unlucky, I bought a williams purchased a cambelt kit and had it booked in for a belt change. That night on the way home it snapped its belt doing 30mph. Cost the best part of £700 to get it back on road, So get it done asap while your at it get the waterpump changed aux belt and tensioner.

Play it safe, Dont be sorry :D

ive just bought my car (172 cup) its on 55,000 miles on a 52 plate and as far as im aware its never had a belt changed, ive booked it in straight away for next wednesday, everytime i drive it i think its going to give up

Why does everybody recommend getting the waterpump done on the sport engines? Has anybody actually heard of one failing!!??

It can't be a common problem. Seems to be a cliosport.net myth and I expect renault have been doing a cracking trade in waterpumps!

Take it the cambelt needs to come off to replace the water pump? and would that mean a new cambelt if it is taken off?

Sure I've read somewhere it's advised to use a new cambelt if the old one is removed for whatever reason

The belt should not be any tighter than the old one that come's off otherwise there would be a chance of the timing being incorrect. I just don't see the point of all these people changing it when they are known NOT to be a faulty part.

Plus the coolant pump can be changed by just removing the aux belt as it doesn't run off the cambelt.

Yep my cambelt went on my 182 at 20k 2 years ago !! Warranty job though so i got a new engine but i wasn't impressed considering i only had bought the car 5 weeks prior !, Still like i say new engine in and sold the car 6 weeks ago with 40k on the clock, defo worth doing though as like mine if the aux belt snaps bye bye cambelt and valves...

Get it done now for piece of mind...
Mine is a 51 plate and it was not done until i bought it this year... the belt was really bad! Dave at Rentech said i was lucky that the aux belt didn't snap!
