Anyone with timing tools that can help pls? Manchester area.

As the title says really, Need help checking my timing after getting it done at a supposed specialist (not naming and shaming just yet) and they are adamant that its timed up correct, even after checking it a second time but the horseshoe had to be HAMMERED in place (yeah really) light taps but still used a HAMMER :/ Now I have the usual sign's of a missed timed engine. :(

Its down on power and stutters a low rpm and little throttle inputs, hunts like a b**ch, stalls when engine is under load but no revs to help it and the cat stinks now which is unburnt fuel get dumped in it and the mpg is down to 25.5, oh and the nasty lumpy idle as it sits at 600rpm,

But they will NOT check it again just keep telling me its right n its something else causing the problems ( something to do with pride maybe? I dunno), So I left the car with them for a week and they found nothing else wrong, so I've drove the car home and now trying to get them to do the job again and properly this time but i'm getting know where.

Thanks

You should always take it to a well known specialist on here not to someone who claims they know what they are doing and in hindsight I'm sure you now know that.

Your timing is definitely out from those symptoms. If i were you being in Manchester I'd run it up to diamond motors in Nottingham. Bit of a trek but its peace of mind. Maybe there's someone closer

It was on advice from here and facebook groups that this place got mentioned so I was thinking i'd be in safe hands, but your right i should have made the journey to a well know specialist because that's where i'm going to end up anyway now and paying twice lol, live and learn I suppose.

Just wanted to check it before I made the trip to make sure i'm right ( even tho i know i am)

Hi same happened to me,get a report off the specialist then ring trading standards, which i did tell the garage who did it wrong that you have a report that timing was out etc. Then get a refund,i had a full refund through a cambelt that was timed poorly

someone will likely charge you for checking it anyway as cam seals etc need replacing. I'd just take it to a specialist asap. Sounds fubar'd tbh. Talk to @MicKPM. Hes your man. Sorted my timing out cars been brilliant ever since

Cheers Dan, I should have gone there to start with.

I'm going back in the morning to see if I can get them to listen, maybe show them this thread lol, What gets me is the do a lot of work on Renaultsport's the workshop is full of them and their known in the megane and 197/200 forums, I think that's why its hard for them to admit they got it wrong. I'll give Birchdown a ring in the morning to so they can laugh at me too.

Who did it? I'm not the kind to rip into someone as we are all capable of making a mistake but it's how you deal with the mistakes that sets you apart fr the rest.

I'm just curious

Birchdown would also be my shout but if you wanted a trip to Nottingham I would gladly look at it for you.

Nope, I listen to everyone that time when I asked about North West Performance, I really don't want to name and shame in public just yet in case they own up and fix it, but I will tomorrow if I get know where just want to give them another chance.

I think you need to have it checked elsewhere as you said this company have had it a week and claim the timing is correct. I don't see them changing their stance

I see your point total Knuckles, as its not nice sat here feeling like I've been robbed, give me until tomorrow to talk to them and after that I will tell you all, I have my reasons I'm not being a d*ck just want to talk to them first.

It is entirely plausible that the timing isn't the issue BUT without having or seeing the car I can't say.

We're here if you need help though

I do think I need to have someone else check it over if I get nowhere in the morning, they did check the timing in front of me after I drove off and was back within minutes saying how bad the car feels now and the horseshoe tool never lined up in the cams unless he tapped it with a hammer.

Yeah, that's 100% not right then and it only has to be slightly wrong to make a huge difference on these cars.

Maybe a daft question but I was under the impression that once the crank, pulleys and cams are all locked into position with the timing tools...... Then the timing is set at the correct point??

Yes but then the belt has to be spun round a few times with all the pulleys lose to set the tension, and then tighten all the pulleys.

I think its that part most people forget to do

They are floating pulleys on the camshafts and crank. These have to be loosened off in order to remove the belt if I remember correctly. Upon tensioning the belt, it has to be done with the the pulleys still lose. If its not spun round a few times, then the tension isn't even over the whole belt run. If its left until its all tightend up, the only way the tension can even out, is by one of the pulleys moving. Hence the timing then becoming out.

Someone more technically minded can explain it better than me.

As you would have too lock the crank, pulleys cams up again which would mean the timing will be at the correct point.....

Right I see thanks

Also, without going in to it too much (it's late and I can't be assed), when you tighten the fixings there is a torsional effect which travels thru the assembly. If you don't have the pulleys locked quite right or have the cams in the correct position, this forces the cam position to advance a few minutes.

When you turn it over by hand afterwards you will find the setting tool won't go in without force... This is a minor inaccuracy but one that can still rob you of power and cause a poor running issue.

Was I right in what I said? @MicKPM

I've been trying to read up on the timing procedure for engines with floating pulleys as I was gonna do our focus myself

Or maybe they feel like a complete utter t**t for thinking that there was a problem with the timing and it was another issue..........[emoji23][emoji23]

That's why I initially said it *May* not even be timing related but it's the easy one to blame. Without having the car in view and being able to get balls deep in it, it's impossible to say for sure. At least he didn't name and shame as reputations can be destroyed over silly things like this.

Totally agree Mick but would be nice if he had the decency to put everyone straight on the matter instead of letting everyone make there own assumptions and putting companies names in the mix..........

I guess it was possibly something silly that was forgotten and been resolved sometimes those tools are tight to get in, but yeah it would be nice to have an update.
