I must say i've never felt the need to plug anything in to someone elses TV.

Its not just a media player. Is it?

no it also surfs teh web and that looks better on a big screen i find it much easier shearing stuff on a screen rather than passing round a laptop/netbook/tablet

my point is basically for the sake of swapping the vga for hdmi and using a slightly better screen and been able to process 1080p id might of actually bought one !!

Theres already one.

There is on the MBP I know. I use it almost daily, but surely the iFad OS will be a little more tied down?

The potential for this device is quite high IMO. Remote control for all your AV gear and such. It's the apps that will make it IMO.

  A blue one.

so if its so closly based on a tegra why doesnt it do 1080p lol

Its not based on it, it has similar architecture.

Why would it need 1080p? The screen res isn't sufficient enough for 720p let alone 1080p

Pmsl at the moron that wrote that article. What exactly did they expect, Apple to license the Cortex Core and then completely re-engineer it? lol.

Big fail on the part of somebody who doesn't understand how the ARM architecture works.

Your chip manufacturer purchases a license from ARM to use the core, they then build around the core (via the AMBA bus) their own peripherals and interfaces (you can extend the instruction set if you need to).

So to sum up, you can read the papers, look at photos play some games and use it as a very expensive remote control.

Don't get me wrong it looks awesome and the interface is, frankly awesome but who will use it where? If you are going to work with your laptop and iPhone will you take this as well? If you go away for a few days would you take this or a laptop? Out and about generally would you take it with you as well as your iPhone? To me it looks like something you would just use while drinking your coffee in the kitchen on a morning, and for that it's way to expensive. And no USB or SD is poor show, you have to get a seperate adapter.

I imagine he ^^^ will have one, and if my mate wangles me a freebie I will too. I like it but not enough to buy it.

I think most people who have a laptop won't buy it unless it's a big one you're not wanting to move about, then essentially it's a desktop.

'Going online' used to be the thing you did in a back bedroom somewhere and was a geeky thing. Now everyone wants to use the internet and they want to do it cheaply and sat in front of the tv. Hence the arrival and popularity of netbooks. This is all it's competing with.

It's not a MacBook. If you want power on the move then you buy a laptop. If you want something that's easy to use, looks good and actually works well, then you buy the iPad instead of some crappy PC World thing that works for a day before it's slow and sluggish.

But for the money you can get a decent thing, not some PC world crap. I understand it is a whole new niche, but it's kind of like an X6 just not as ugly.

I know you're right but it will have USB, SD, optical drive, probably HDMI, a big HD and can do pretty much the same stuff just differently. Like I said, if I can get one free I'll have it and be very happy.

You can get USB and SD adaptors for iPad...

I'm sure someone will make a dock with video out too.

So only missing optical. I think ive used me MacBook drive 5 times in a year.

ignoring the money, a good quality netbook is used for:

- browsing the net
- sending emails
- viewing pics
- watching videos (youtube etc)
- controlling music programs (like mediaplayer/itunes)
- transport around with you
- writing basic documents etc for meetings

the iPad does all of this. but 10x better than a netbook.

- and it is a proper e-reader
- is touchscreen
- has the best UI of any mobile device ever created
- includes the ease of proper calander/maps etc
- can play games with much easier control system
- has a HOST of developers working on new features, that will be released for free in the next OS
- looks 10x better

yes its more money. but everything apple is more money.

Yes, as I've stated in my previous posts.....

Wouldn't have been hard to include it though instead of extracting a few more notes out of the public. Just another thing you need to carry around.

Exactly, but you're wasting your breath mate.

It's clear who it's aimed at and it's NOT your common or garden geek, its a web browser & email (and more) for those who are intimidated by the tv remote control, this is a whole new target market.

We hardly ever bring the laptops downstairs when we're on the sofa because it's a pain in the backside, we end up surfing on a touch or iPhone, but that has its limits with the screen res.

That actually looks awesome. Although like all Apple stuff the 2nd gen will probably see some worthwhile improvements.

Ok, I have thought of a use for it that would make me actually buy it. If someone built an App that turned it into a touch sensitive mixer. You've got your tunes on the thing and the screen turns into 2 decks and a mixer. THAT would make it good.

I'm assuming it can't multitask ?

If I use a laptop in front of the tv it's usually msn + web browser and maybe put my earphone in and itunes if I don't want to watch what everyone else is watching.

could be it's downfall maybe. I can see the target market though and how it could be a good product for those people who only want it for a few small tasks.

It can, it just wont.

I can use MSN and web at the same time on an iPhone. (and listen to a song)

  Titanium 182
Edit, ah I see.

I guess it's just different to "multitasking" on the pc/macbooks and you've could get used to it.
still I think I'm going to stick with a MBP. (When they update them :()

Id want it to mutli task and i spose the iphone does

you on net, pop up on MSN and you see the message no different to using a pc just you got to go in and out of apps

I think this is aimed at people that just use the net

My parents only use there computers at home for the net and net only. they dont have msn running or anything like that

I'm talking professional not tin pot, supported by Vestax or someone else. Proper looking layout with jog wheels, effects etc. Or an Ableton layout, that would be cool.

The iPad may be a good alternative for controlling my home media PC and Squeezebox units rather than using my iPhone with HippoRemote. Not sure that's a valid reason to spend £400 though.

eBay -> buy a ipaq for ~£20 -> load up software (cant remember name) for controlling squeeze box.

done.
