Apple Maps Data Usage

  MK4 Anni & MK5 Edt30
Does anyone know how much internet usage the Apple Maps sat nav uses, say on a typical 1 hour journey? Don't want to rinse the sat nav if its gonna kill my monthly allowance. I've downgraded from 1GB to 500MB a month you see. I've looked everywhere on the internet but it doesn't confirm, only says that it uses less than Google Maps.

Many thanks

I wouldn't rely on it to be honest mate.

FLOL.

Well anyway to answer your question, very little. As long as you don't use hybrid/sat mode (which turn by turn won't use anyway)
Its more efficient on data than the outgoing maps by a long long way.

Reset your data counter and check for yourself as its journey dependant.

Used it last night and it was superb. 3D buildings are a nice touch, but it was central london.

No worries, at least it was an answer of sorts.

Unlike you know who.

Being vector based really helps bring the usage down, IIRC it only consumes about 20% of the data that google maps used to for example, as that is a shonky bitmapped base effort.

Tis a bit pony apparently the rumoured google app switches to vector.

I was using Maps a lot after I upgraded to ios 6, barely even touched my monthly allowance. And it got me everywhere it needed to with ease.

With 500MB I'd try and avoid tbh.

I would often just go over 500MB, up to about 600MB by just updating and browsing during work hours (In breaks and toilet breaks) then before and after the gym before getting back to home/wireless.

Unlimited now though :rasp:

Have you used the turn-by-turn maps? It's surprisingly good.

To answer the OPs question, in the past week I've used 150MB but that's using Maps a lot, plus I streamed 60 minutes of the Arsenal game on Saturday, which tbh, probably accounts for the vast majority of that usage. So it can't be that data hungry.

I've not used it, but I know I do lose phone connection quite a bit, which is why I said I wouldn't rely on it.

It doesnt need a constant connection to work.
It does need some connection, but intermittant still works fine as it caches the directions.

Ive found it works really well, even to some of the rural areas I go where google maps used to suffer far more.

It couldn't find the casino in central London :dapprove: but that's not the turn by turn.

The searching is completely useless when you are used to google maps.

I just google up a postcode and put that in, then the actual turn by turn is really good.

I used turn by turn yesterday and it was good tbh. On a 120 mile journey I think it used 1.5MB of data - so in reality, nothing. It also got me to where I need to go within about 100 yards - can't complain at that tbh.

Are the maps not preloaded then, no?

I used it twice this month and was brilliant. If you're worried about data usage download NavFree. Free sat nav app which doesn't use you're data.

Maps is making me rage at the moment, I keep trying to type in names of places and getting nowhere :(

Yeah its such a pain when you have been used to being spoilt by googles epic ability to find things from the vaguest of descriptions :(

Just google it first and then enter the postcode, although thats a ballache.

I do miss the Google maps, worked brilliantly around London and the South of France
