Are Brembo calipers covered under warranty?

Dropped my car of at Theoco today for front pads. Told them about the feel of the brakes and said that I think that the calipers have seized. Just been called back by dealer to say calipers have seized and they need replacing. They are £315 each!!!!

They are going to check with Renault on Monday to see if they are covered under warranty, which they feel will be the case.

Have any of you had calipers changed under warranty, in case I need some extra ammunition?

I'm just guessing here, but I'd say they were wear and tear. For all they know they car could have been sat round for months, hence seizing up.. Good luck!
 
Car has been serviced at correct intervals. Just have to wait until Monday!!!

Can't even pin it on Renault as its a bought in part!!! Really don't want to be one of the horror stories here:(
 
rubbish, the pads will be seized in the calipers, the stock pads are too big and get stuck in the caliper

get them to change the pads, but when fitting new pads, grind the edges down slightly so the pad is "free" to move

no chance a brembo caliper is seized

Just spoken to the garage again and explained what you had said. The inner pistons have completely seized and therefore most of the braking has been done using the rear brakes!!!
 
15% done by the back and 85% up front roughly you would stop at all,and if one caliper had seized you would be pulling severely to the direction of the caliper

I am not a mechanic and have gone on the advice of the dealer and conversations with other members here. A couple of points to note.

The car has done 38,000 on the first set of front pads. There is also still life left in the pads. The rear pads have been changed at the last service.

I have never had any car do this mileage on the front pads and still have life left. The ratio of changing front and rear pads is normally 2 sets of fronts to 1 set of rears. This car has had 0 sets of fronts and 1 set of rears. They have probably been like this for ages.

I said when I test drove the car that I didn't like the feel of the brakes. The rest of the car is mint, it is still covered under warranty and I suspect that the previous owner probably didn't know how bad they were.

No you are wrong. Most of the braking is done on the fronts. If you think you can stop well with just the rears try doing 70 and try stopping with just the handbrake. Youll either end up in a hedge or in the back of another car.

ROFL! That made me laugh! As above, try ripping the handbrake up and controlling it! Why do you think the car dives forward when braking? All the weight is going over the front axle as the wheels are trying to stop it there!

As above 85/15 F/R split! You'd be spinning if the rears were the only ones working!
 
Sounds like they are trying to pull a fast one. No offence intended, but it sounds like you don't know anything about the brakes etc, get someone who knows what they are doing to take a look.

Nope, as already said, the majority of the breaking comes from the front. Why do you think they fit huge Brembo calipers up front then leave standard Renault items on the rear?

I'd expect anything to be fixed within the first 3 years.

lol at most of the braking at the rear, physics not a strong subject at school?

Most of the braking is done by the front axle, very little is done by the rears.

No way your car has been braking using just the rears - as others have said you'd have binned it long ago if that was the case.

There's some qualified opinions on here from people who work in the industry, versus the line you're getting from a dealership that's part of what could be regarded as one of the worst, most uneducated main dealer franchise networks going.

Listen to the dealer and be > £750 out of pocket, or try a second opinion, spend £4.99 on that eBay link above and realise how close you were to being well and truly had.

I think he means on his because the fronts are a bit fucked, correct me if I'm wrong;).
 
I think tbh that he has just written it the wrong way round and was trying to say that SOME breaking is done at the back.
 
they are, but we were saying he'd have crashed and died in a horrible ball of flame if his front calliper was siezed, so i think he was trying to defend the stealer by pointing out the rears do do some breaking.

At least I hope thats what he meant...

Here is a bit more info from my conversations. Firstly, I am well aware of the ratio of front braking to rear. I am not a mechanic so cannot fix the car myself but I do have a good understanding of how it works hence my surprise at the rear pads being replaced before the fronts.

The brake pedal has a lot of travel with very little stopping force followed by bite and then the abs kicks in. There is very little between the bite and the abs kicking in. As far as I am aware, the garage have removed the seized pins. They have told me that the inside pistons (the ones on the side of the engine if that helps) have seized on both front callipers, so the front brakes only work when the outside pads grip. Therefore there is braking from the front as well as the rear. Saying that, when I looked at the disks, they seem to be significantly more worn on the insides.

However I dress it up the brakes feel sh1t. They have done so since I bought the car (only had it a couple of weeks) and I knew that they would need a service which I accept. If I stand on them, the stopping power isn't even as good as my old Bora. The car doesn't necessarily pull to the left or right as the brakes are in the same condition on both sides.

I will find out on Monday if the callipers will be replaced under warranty. If Renault says no (and I have already told the garage that I won't take no for an answer) then what are my options?

I can't do the job myself and the car is not safe as it is. I ferry my kids around and whatever it costs to sort the brakes out is a better option than doing nothing.

I am open to suggestions. If it helps, I live in North West London.
 
A little more.

Just spoken to my mechanic who I have used for years (as the car is still under warranty I wanted all work to be done through Renault) and he has confirmed all that you have said about skimming the pads etc. but also that he can repair the callipers.

I will let you know if I get them replaced under warranty.

I absolutely love the car, just fu*ked off at the mo.
 
we had a fiat coupe with a brembo caliper gone was £££'s customer ended up getting a second hand one, im sure you can rebuild them though
 
A dealer told me that my rear discs and pads needed changing at the 12,000m service. It's now done 53,000m and a few track days and still has the original rear setup. Dealers talk s**t, and your first mistake was telling them what you think is wrong.

As said, it's almost certainly the front pads sticking. Do you notice any binding at all?
 
This sounds exactly like what mine was like. I bought the car, the brakes were s**t, so I took it to Fred and low and behold the pads were welded to the calipers.

Could definitely do with a getting a second opinion from someone in the know before you commit to anything thats going to cost you money.

I spoke to Fred yesterday who gave me the lowdown. I also spoke to my mechanic last night who without any prompting said exactly the same as Fred. So the plan is if Renault won't replace the callipers under warranty, I will pick the car up and buy the brake pads and locator pins and get my mechanic to do it.

Thanks for all your help. I have had a very stressful week and this just topped it off!!!! I feel back on planet sanity today.
