Are Clio MK2's reaching the point of pikey owners?

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
Hi,

This isnt a personal dig at anyone in particular, ive just noticed alot of threads lately where people seem to be cutting corners and generally saying they cant afford the most basic of basic things for the car even if its safety related.

Are Mk2's now at that price point where pikey like owners are buying them? They can just about scrape £2k together to buy one but not run one.

This isnt me taking the piss here either....but ive noticed a few genuine "innits" etc in threads now...

What do you think?

I personally cant afford a 197 at the min without taking out a loan. My 182 is just comfortable for me running cost wise. I can afford to run it and maintain it well however i think going for a 197 or something of similar cost would be stretching me a little thin.

They're definitely reaching the point where a lot of young guys are buying them and crashing them. Two steps away from being chav wagons.

I think that could be another thing that made me think about the caliber of people who now own mk2's...I seem to have seen a hell of alot more just crashed threads lately than previous winters.

With any hot hatch there'll always be an appeal to chavvy boy racers.

Now they're getting cheaper i guess they are a little more in reach of people after cheap performance but thats always gonna be the case, look at the 5 turbo?

Good point Ben. A mk1 172 can be easily had for under £2k. With a mk2 coming in at around £2.5k.

Ive noticed alot of non sport mk2's driven by complete tits as well lately though.

Yeah there have been a lot of "my talent just ran out" threads recently. Shame but I guess that's why insurance costs more for the n00bs.

lmfbo, I prob spent more on my mk1 williams in three months than the price of a half decent mk2 lol and its still being broken for spares and replaced by a ph1 172. i refuse to pay anything more than 2k for a car as i know what i'm like and it will be abused on track so for me its cheap, disposable cars FTW :D

  Never above 25mpg
MK2 Clios yes. MK2 Sports not so sure... insurance is the main thing. Hence why (sorry to the owners :p) they mainly purchase the 1.2s or 1.4s!!

Agree to an extent although seeing alot of just crashed 1*2 threads as well.

In my opinion mk1 valvers/williams have passed pikey ownership and are now becoming collector/enthusiast items

You're right, although it's rare to see a chavved up Sport ( in my area anyway)!

See loads of PH1 silver or green Grande's with lexus lights and fox racing wheels from halfrauds!

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
the demographic has certainly changed over the last 12 months, so many more about being driven my 19/20 year olds

Really ?? Where from ? For that price they must be complete dogs or recorded.

Pikey is as pikey does.

A new rarri can be made 'chav' if driven by someone in sportswear and lashing of gold jewellery.

If people feel so strongly about it get ride of the car.

I shouldnt have said easily had for £2k. There are a few around in that price bracket not loads though granted. I would say that most the pikey owned ones generally are dogs anyway.

I personally dont feel that strongly about it. Just something ive noticed and thought it could be discussed. See what other owners think.

yeah - cheap, fast car

inevitable that the 'demographic' of the owners will change as they age and become more affordable. that won't stop the 'more genuine' enthusiasts being attracted to them though - there'll always be those who are perhaps more discerning in maintaining them

something else highlighted in this thread, though, is the number of people who are lucky enough to be able to afford much newer models and have them maintained by dealers - always unattractive if ever they seem to look down upon the older models/owners of said
