Are iPhone4 headphones supposed to work in a 3GS?

Just been given a fresh set of headphones out of an iPhone4 box by a mate as mine suffered a timely death on a boozy night out. However I'm finding the controls aren't working?

Faulty headphones? Dodgy socket? OR just meant to be that way?

Standard iphone headphones should be promptly placed as far away from the iphone/ipod as soon as possible!

On another note, controls should be working as far as I know!
