AST top mounts-do they have to be matched with coilover make?

  182
Hopefully someone can clear this up for me so thanks in advance if you can
Ive recently got a set of turinis thatcame with standard mitchellin tyres, ive been running 195 40's for so long and these new wheels with correct tyres have shown me all over again just how fun the clio is and amazing handling around corners etc

So, i now fancy also getting suspension set up to make it as good as it can be, i plan on getting a whiteline ARB and also want some solid top mounts, ive bewn thinking about ktec and AST's

My question relates to the AST's, im currently on GAZ coilovers So does this mean i would have to get the ast top mounts that are designed to fit the gaz coilovers? Or would standard fitment be fine seing as though i currently use standard renault ones anyway? Im confused the things ive read about the ast's and matching the make of suspension, why?

Cheers for any help guys

I'm sure the top hat has to be machined. as i hate to state if they were for standard shocks or coilovers.

Im not 100% on this but as far as i know they were designed to fit AST coilovers but can be machined to fit anything else. Not sure if they need machining to make 'universal' or to individual applications.

Ring Curtis at AST, he dont bite

Fred, what would you suggest for low budget suspension mods then? Arb, what top mounts? It gets a full range of road use and quite a bit of track too.

Top mounts are made for standard suspension or all coilovers.

I have kw's and they work fine with them but I was told they will work with others.

^^THIS

I'm getting tired of replying to all the top mount threads saying to get them
Seriously - best kit i've seen
Best thing i've bought for the clio

although the only problem with the pure motorsport ones is that they need a drilling template, that's a bit of a t**t to do

Only thing I dont like about the Pure ones is you dont get an upper spreader plate unless you also use one of their strut braces, and a strut brace on a clio is one of the most pointless mods going

If the AST's are new in the last two years you should be able to swap them to another coilover set without issue. They are machined to the maximum they can so they suit all makes.

Took me literally 10 minutes

Dropped the coilovers out and clamped the strut brace in place with some g-clamps.
Drilled the holes, fitted the new top mounts and bolted it all together

I have no idea what you're saying - if you don't have the strut brace you get top parts for the top mounts - have you seen their website?

And I would normally agree that a strut brace is pointless - unless it bolts to the top mounts
If it was pointless - why did they fit them to the cup racers?

Have to agree with Phil, fantastic piece of kit and would love to fit these on the car but spherical bearings are not alowed in rd going class, link these with their bottom arms and rear beam kit and you've got all you need for a well sorted track car and possibly add a few strengthening welds to the chassis, wouldn't fancy fitting the hole kit on a rd going car though.

Regards Russ......

The rear beam kit is on my list over winter - as are the wishbone strengtheners

But yeah I agree - I use mine on the road but only very occasionally as I have a 2nd car. With the negative camber it is a bit of a handful now on bumpy roads lol

Really dont like the look of the pure motorsport ones-not that looks would make my mind though

And can you not use the engine cover if you have the strut brace?

I'd love to run at Harewood next year! but do you mean in your car in mod prods or can you still run in 1B with the above, you'll have to PM me.

^^ Ah I see, I'll stay with rd going don't want the car undriveable on the rd, got all the bits ready to go on just waiting for funds for the diff, engine will have to wait untill next winter, I assume you'll be getting a trailer then. I'll see you at Anglesey or 3 Sisters.

Man I spoke with Nick and this top mounts dont come with upper spreader plate if bought separately from the strut brace,
they will start doing one soon though.
