auto-lights nearly caused a crash

on my way home from visitng the rs trackday at oulton park basically lorry waiting to pull out, i pass under a bridge and my lights flash on, he thinks i have flashed to let me out and i very nearly crashed into him i wasnt expecting him to pull ou as wasnt safe to do so.

gonna have to dig out my manual and turn the function off, or buy a cup.

Yours must be more sensitive to mine, as they never come on under bridges or trees, and even if I go into an underground car park take about 15-20 secs to come on.

Wasn't the lights that nearly caused it, it was the d***head lorry driver taking a flash of your lights as confirmation it's safe to pull out without himself considering if it was in fact safe to pull out.

As above, too many people do this.

I never flash for people;, I'll leave a gap, slow down, even come to a stop sometimes and it's incredible how many people just sit there looking at you waiting for a wave or flash to say they can go.

HELLO! I've left you the space - can't you decide if it's safe???

Also, with everyone sueing the f*** out of everyone else these days, do you really want to have a claim against you becasue you flashed someone out of a junction, who then had an accident, and then blames you because you said they could go with a flash of your lights?

Yep, unless it's sunshining (which it never is) xenons on all the time, on motorways and dual carriageways especially.

It doesn't. Flashing lights is exactly the same as beeping your horn - it lets other drivers know you are there.

full agreement, the lorry driver had his brain turned off and used my car flashing at him as a "its ok mate, just pull out, i know im appraching you and showing no signs of slowing down and the gaps small, but go for it"

im to tight to use xenons all day all the time, worried about the cost of replacement bulbs lol, besdies it was still clear and bright when this happened.

when im waiting to pull out of a junction and the car approaching has its indicator on i wait until they have started their turn, all an indicator means is that their bulb works, nothing more.

I normally go for a wave, in the eyes of the law, flashing your lights is warning someone that your there. So at a junction technically means don't pull out I'm comming through.

Unlucky on your lights comming on then, I never thought of them being dangerous !

I've always wondered whether if you flashed your lights to a car waiting at a junction, and it pulled out and you ploughed into the side of it, whether you'd get in trouble or not. Technically, you're making the car aware of your presence.

No, technically the flash is to let someone know you're there. It's in t'Highway Code somewhere

You're already slowing, that's visible to them, let them make a decision based on that.

If they can't assess the situation and make that decision...do you really want to be behind them, waiting for their next moment of indecision?

Agree, if they pull out when you flash or wave to them and they hit something then they're gonna blame you for telling them its safe. I never pull out if they flash, always check first.

Classic example... picture a double lane road through a town at traffic lights, car stops in right hand lane to let someone in from a junction on the right, the cars behind stop and prevent the person joining the road to see car's moving up the left hand lane... bang! Same if someone wants to cross the carriageway.

thing is lorry drivers use the light flash on motorways to let each other know they are clear to pull in as they cant judge easily the back of there lorry. so its kinda natural for him to assume thats what you were doing.

i leave lights on all the time unless the sun is blarring.

I find it useful but probably because i'm too lazy to turn a stalk!

I wouldn't have thought it would have 'flashed' going through a tunnel. Mine come on pretty quickly but (with mine anyway) there's a timed delay when you exit a tunnel back into daylight.

I just find them annoying when there's an awkward amount of light and they can't make their mind up whether they're on or off, other people must think i'm looney turning them on and off!

And riding on motorbikes an awful lot, I have seen some disgusting and outragous driving from other road users.

i've had this before, there is a particular bridge on the way to mums house where i just know they are going to come on, and a junction is slap bang next to it. Its annoying.

Another thing that f***s me off is following people who slow down/leaving gaps for people to pull out into, yet the person in the lane next to you hasn't even indicated they want to pull out. If they wanted to pull out they'd stick their bloody indicator on, but instead you've just slowed down the faster moving traffic. I know it's trying to be helpful, but if the person can't even plan ahead or use an indicator they deserve to be held up, assuming they even want to overtake They might just be happy sat there

Not sure if that came out how I meant it to, and hope it's not just me who gets annoyed at that
