Auto revs, smoke and loss of power

  Renault Clio 1.5dci
Ok, so heres the problem...

I was driving back to Manchester from my parents home (about 35 miles away) when about 3/4 of the way through the journey i pull up to a set of traffic lights and i notice the engine sounded funny. I looked at the rev counter and noticed that the idle speed was dropping and the engine was 'auto revving' itself.

As i tried to drive on, i could feel a loss of power in the engine and see (and smell) alot of smoke coming out of the back of the exhaust. I decided to pull over for a few minutes and turn the engine off. I then started it up again and things were back to normal. There were no warning lights on when i was driving the car.

Could anyone give me an idea of the problem it could be or a list of things it could be?

The car is a 2003 model, 1.5dci with 89k on the clock.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Oooo, I wouldnt drive it. Sounds like the turbo's up the swanny. The reason it will rev up its self is that it uses the engine oil to run on. So even if you turn it off on the key it wil run on. An you wont be able to stop it (unless you stall it) untill it either blows or runs out of oil.

Get it to a garage asap is my advise.

thats what i would have said, but he turned it off and it went away from what i can gather.

Check your oil level though.

hmm....well i decided to drive back to my parents house because my dad wanted to take a look at it...however, when i was a few miles away i was driving up a hill when the car started to judder and then it just cut out altogether....? I had to pull over and this time i tried to start it....it wouldn't start....like it was out of fuel....I left it for about 10 mins then it started up and drove as normal again???

Suggestions to take it to a garage and see what they say? I hope it's not going to cost me loads to fix it! :(

think its a common fault laguna's do it a lot when the turbo is on way out . howmany miles ago was it last serviced . if you take the black pipe of that goes from the turbo to the egr valve and have a look inside to see if it covered in oil there will be a little bit in there but if there is a lot the its more than likely teh seals in the turbo . also try wobbling the turbo shaft up and downto see if there is excessive wear it will move slightly but any more than half a mm to 1mm and its likely to be worn. could be an injector pump problem, any lights on the dash/have you had it scanned at all?

There weren't any lights on the dash, until the engine cut out on me a few days ago...and then it just had the stop light on...which dissapeared when i started the car up about 5 minutes later.

I think i might have to take it to a garage. I've been driving a Micra for the last few days whilst my car was being driven by my dad. But i got it back today and noticed that when i rev the engine, it seems to shake/shudder a little when i take it off revs? which i never noticed before....also the engine seems louder and like there it something metal that rattles now? (Though i have never noticed this before, it could have been there before and i've only just noticed since i've driven the bullet proof micra!)

Sorry if this seems a little thick....but i was under the impression my dci engine didn't have a turbo...because mine is so bloody slow?!?

what did they do to fix your dci ? sounds like something still isnt right there though . yeh there turbo'd but its tiny and only runs low boost.

sounds like oil leaking into the engine , but I'm no expert. Would seem silly to risk driving it until you know for sure.
