autocar 197 cup review

cool. Wish Renaultsport would update their web site to show cup pack option on the 197.

Looks stunning in white. Tbh I'm not sure I'd be too bothered about no reach adjust on the steering, I mean my 182 hasn't got it and the Corolla I had before that didn't either. Nor did the 306 I had before that.... or the 106 I had before that. I test a lot of cars with it and it's good to have, but I've managed without it on my own cars for this long so I wouldn't worry.

Having said that I'd still probably go for a cupped FF 197. The 20kg saving on the cup is bugger all. Unless that whole white/black wheel look seduced me...

Its just dawned on me but if im brutally honest, with the fact you can have all the Cup bits as an option on a 197 now and seeing there is only a 20g saving, doesn't the Cup look a bit pointless?

Needs to be a good 100kgs lighter to make sense i think.

yeah buy the normal 197 in white with the cup pack and recaros, more toys as standard and the dash on the cup is piss poor

I very nearly signed up for a 197 Cup as well but the fuel economy....or lack of it, kinda put me off.

"The Renaultsport 197 Cup gearbox now features a taller 5th and 6th gear ratios, raised from 16.1mph/1000rpm to 17.1 in 5th and from 18.9mph/1000rpm to 20.5 in 6th. This new specification will also be fitted as standard to the Clio Renaultsport 197."

THATS NEWS TO ME - FINALLY RENUALT GOT THE MESSAGE!!

imo they coulda gone a little taller

  M2 Competition
They should have made 6th taller, as motorway cruising was the main problem. You dont use 6th other than on the motorway.

1.6% weight saving according to the article! Why the hell anyone would put up with a naff interior, no air con etc for that type of weight saving is beyond me. Unpainted side strips:dead: .

It's called personal preference. Aircon is an option, and as has been said many times before, the interior is the same as the rest of the Clio range, so it's hardly naff is it?

It's still massively better than that in the previous generation of Clios.

And above all, something most people seem to forget is that the Cup is cheaper. I know everyone on here earns £50k plus a year so £1k to £2k doesn't matter, but in the real world it does.

So every car on the road today with unpainted stips is :dead:? Most cars you see have unpainted strips. The 172 Cup had unpainted ones, they were just moulded in blue, so they aren't a painted finish.

At the end of the day it's a cheap 197. And very cheap at that with the current deals dealers are prepared to do.

The interior isn't naff and aircon is an option. The standard dash in the Cup is still far far superior to anything that ever appeared in a mk2 Clio.

Dont let them get to you Lee. whens yours arrive :)

They don't. I could have had a FF 197, but there's no point. The money I've saved will go on a very nice driving holiday later this year.

My only regret is that I didn't buy an R27. They were a bargain. I could have gone one for only a little more than I've paid for the Cup!!!

BTW Paul, your dashboard is vile, I don't know how you cope with it, I'd have killed myself by now if I had to look at that every day. ;) (same as the one in the Trophy)

£1k to £2k when spending £14k isn't much and to have a few more comforts, it would be worth it to me.

I'm not slating your choice Lee. I would just go for the FF version if it was me. I cannot afford it, I need to save up for a house, so I am jealous yes, but I can't have everything unfortunately.

I wanted brand new. And because I get a Friends and Family discount it has to be a factory order, not a car a dealer has in stock.

Wasn't having a dig at your choice Lee, was just talking about the article in general. I had a new 182cup when they came out, which wasn't exactly a popular choice!

I know mate. I'm not bothered what people think about what I drive. I got over that years ago. If it bothered me I'd have kept the 182 and not gone to the Trophy, or I'd have had a Megane R26. I know most people won't be overly impressed with the Cup.

I know, you'll still be doing the best part of 4k at 80mph.Thats shite for a motorway journey

TBH I know its inevitable they will go on motorways at some time, but if you buy one knowing you'll be doing massive motorway mileage, buy something else lol....or live with it.

The cup will do what it says on the tin and thats it,as it has always been with the cup models.

Shame they could'nt nock a bit more weight of it though and make it have an impact like the 172 cup did

I'm sure if Renault could have ditched ABS then they probably would have.

Personally they should have given it windy windows to save a bit more weight ;)

I'd love a 197 when it's time to sell my 182. Drove one for a good few hours and I thought it was superb. The only thing that would stop me getting my wallet out is the fuel economy. I know that performance cars drink a bit, and I don't mind the 32ish that my car is giving at the mo, but in the same driving the 197 was giving me mid 20s tops, and that's just not good enough. On a run it was 28.5 - still not good enough. Hmmm.

I am gonna wait till 2nd hand one's or pre registered start appearing.

seeing as u can get a 197 FF for what... 10k now? think how cheap a cup will be in 6 - 12 months time!

otherwise, love em, and cant wait to have one at some point!
