Aux belt, is it 3 or 5 years?

So we still don't know?

If majority of Clio owners get it done early and RENUK are arses in paying out for any problems. I dont see why you wouldnt want it done? Prevention is better than a cure albeit we dont know if it is a neccesary prevention at this moment in time.

But if financial constraints is the reason for not doing it then fair enough.

Try putting a 3yr/36k service in to the Renault online service booking form. This WILL quote you for the Aux belt.

AFAIK it has been mentioned on here (edde/fred??) that it was originally 5 years. Renault suffered alot of failures and resulting warranty claims. This was then amended to 3 years but I have no proof!

^^ Aux belt seems to have slipped through the net so to speak!! I have never seen anything about 3 yrs, i have also never seen one fail on a clio, i have had them VERY noisy etc, but not actually off.

It was originally 5yrs it has been ammended to 3yrs/ 36k, it should be done on the 36k service, if it snaps theres a chance it could take out the cambelt.
I work for Renault btw.
ICM says 3yrs now.

Agreed, this is an interesting read though.

I used both the online quote system and rang my dealer direct, both came back with 36k/3 years for the Aux so I had it done.

A guy I know in Australia had the aux belt snap at around 72000km on his 172 and just over 4yrs (IIRC?) It hadn't been replaced at 3yrs as set out in the Aussie service/ warranty book.

It took out his timing belt... he had to get the engine rebuilt. (Mind you the vehicle was used by the previous owner for track work and hill climbs so hadn't had an easy life.)

This has got me slightly worried. Just got my 182 and apparantly the 36k service has been done (to Renault maintanance schedule by an independant garage). Looking through the invoice there is no mention of the aux belt (the service was over £300)

Contacted previous owner and he assures me that if Renault said do it, the independent garage would do it.

Cars currently on 38k and has had an easy life.

Head says get it done to be safe, wallet says no!

I'd get it done, same age as mine but mines only on 18k. Or just "risk" it for abit then get the cambelt done early.

With Renault the 36k including aux belt is around £600 so I'd say it hasn't been done.

Precisely why I wouldn't be going with Renault as that price takes the p**s (along with some of the prices they quote for cambelts!). Ktec quote £210+vat for the 36k service on there website. Shame they're miles from me!

RenTech in Portsmouth are probs your best bet.

Thats still a good 2.5 hour trip for me!! Seen mentions of Carlton garage in Exmouth, thats about 1.5 hour from me. For what it'll cost in day off work/ petrol, I may as well use the local Renault dealer just to do the belt (rest of service has been done it seems, bar the belt)

Mines 3k off 36k i'll be having the aux belt changed next service, don't want it failing and taking out the T/belt

So in conclusion no one has any proof about it saying 3 years?

Just noticed in another thread, Angelworks are offering an aux belt change for £64 (just the belt) or £154 for the full kit (idler, tensioner, pulleys etc). How the hell can Renault quote hundreds of pounds when its plainly obvious (from other garages) that it doesn't take that long. Tis daylight robbery.

Wow, more info on these guys!?

Whats ICM???

So far I've only seen chink wispers, proof please lol.

You know how I love paying for cambelt changes.

ICM is the main Renault data base that holds info on every renault car on the road, engine numbers, gearbox numbers, options out of factory, work done under warranty, recall notices.
If I enter your reg/ vin, select programme maintenance it tells me what needs to be done when, the aux belt is at 36k /3yrs.

Auxilary belt does a lot of work thats why it wears out by 36K My cam/aux belt was changed out by a main dealer in the 40K's miles now at 65K a 2 inch peice of frayed belt has got between the crank pulley and the cambelt which has caused the belt to ride one tooth and hence destroyed my valves. If it looks new it should be OK if at 3 years it looks tired get it changed

I dont see the issue if its 3yrs or 5 years?

Personally I sure as hell woulnt leave an aux belt for 5 whole years even if it only passesd 36k just on the 5 year marker.

ESPECIALLY if your doing track work. Belts really dont like the life they lead.

I'd personally change it at 3 years max and 36k, and come cambelt time it has to come off anyway, and for the sake of £14 odd quid whats to worry about.

Because we are stupid.

The cup is a 10 min aux belt job, i would of had it done ages ago.

And i'd certainly get the cambelt done aswell.

BenR, would you reccomend changing the tensioner/ idler/ pulleys when doing the aux belt? I'm going to approach a local garage during the week and see what they quote and whether they'd be happy doing it. Also what sort of time would it take? (would bring it to you, but I really am miles from you!!)

I'd change them if they were worn/broken/seized, but thats about the only reason.

It can be a right b*****d for people not used to the job.
