Hi all
I've got 94k mile Clio 172 which recently developed a dodgy noise coming from the engine. I took it to a local garage who told me that
with the auxiliary belt off the noise disappears but put it back on and hey presto its there again. The mechanic said that personally he thought it was one of three things 1) auto tensioner 2) idle pulley or 3)
the water pump. He couldn’t give a definitive answer to which one it was but said he was positive that it was the first two - although in his words this was still a stab in the dark.
I then rang my local Renault dealership and spoke to a technician there who said that if the noise goes when the aux belt is off then its definitely the auto tensioner and pulley that need replacing. He said it had nothing
to do with the water pump as this isn’t controlled by the aux belt.
With this info at hand I thought I’d cracked the problem and could safely get the tensioner and pulley fitted to get rid of the noise. I then found this forum and looked for any similar problems from members. In doing so I came across a post that said the aux belt is related to the water pump.
So my question is can anyone help and tell me which part would need replacing? Would it just be the tensioner and pulley or could it actually be the water pump still?
It would cost me about £300+ to get the tensioner and pulley fitted but if I got that done and the noise was still there I think I’d then have to look at getting a bank loan to pay for a new water pump!! (Considering I’ve just paid out £215 yesterday for some other problems!!)
I would greatly appreciate any help and sorry about the long post. Thank you!!
