Axxis Ultimates - brake pads, any good?

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
thats almost free, not sure why you'd quibble it and not just get them. I'm using standard Ferodo pads in mine though, and Anglesey, Llandow and Spa didn't manage to get any fade whatsoever. The car is so light I can't see much need for a harsher compound, just fresh new standards works brilliantly.

I find this very difficult to believe, you must be a very sedate driver on track doing very short sessions and keeping your braking to road work kind of levels. Myself and a few of my friends and most people who do regular trackdays will cook a set of standard pads in about 15 mins on track, they will glaze over and basically wont work properly after a very short time. I can kill a set of yellowstuffs in a day, ds2500's in 2 days.

Not seen Danny drive then...?

LOLZ

I did a full day at Bedford in a 182 earlier this year - brand new pagids... most of the braking is 80-90+ into hairpins .. hardly a bit of scrubbing.

200 miles on track and zero fade.

I wasn't fannying about - it was the GF's car ;)

yeah.....sedate......LOL.

Wasnt trying to insult you ( as was mentioned I havent seen you drive ) however as I said I find this very hard to believe.
So is the trackday brake pad market all just a big con then and all you really need is a set of standard pads from Euro car parts and you're good to go?

There are masses of threads on this forum about track pads going back years, ...yellowstuffs 90 quid, ds2500's 120 quid , ds3000's 150 quid , pagid rs 4-2's 180 quid, perf frictions 200+ quid, are they all unnecessary then and we're all idiots who've been fooled by the brake companies?

Next track day I do I'm going to test your thoery and go out initially with standard pads in , you may have just saved me a fortune over the next year...or maybe not.

There's different reasons for and against changing pads. This for a start is an MX5 specific thread, which is a lot lighter and less powerful than a Clio.
I've done plenty of days on standard pads in Clios though, and I would again. Uprated stuff would have been better, and I could have not lifted until later. Driving around the available services I guess

Lets be honest the two major things that affect the pad type to use are the drivers braking style and the vehicle weight - cooling can also be another factor.

A lightweight car driven by someone with good braking technique will require lower rated pads than the opposite.

I apologise to the OP for hijacking his thread somewhat, but generally on here we're referring to Clios. Obviously there are many factors that affect braking efficiency and longevity, you even state yourself that you could have braked later with 'better' pads in which to be honest proves my original comment. If you babysit standard pads then ok they might get you through a day, but personally I go to a track day to ' rag the granny ' out of my car and babysitting brake pads is not on the agenda. If you were to drive at balls out speeds, doing long sessions , braking as late as you can , standard pads would be no use and wouldnt last. I am still going to test out some standard pads next time out just as an experiment, but I have a feeling I will be getting my hands dirty long before lunch and will be putting some ' proper ' pads in.

this is an mx5 thread, in an MX5, giving literally NO mercy, Standard spec ferodo pads were faultless all day on one of the hottest days of this year at Anglesey. This is what I based the factual recommendation on. Wow its hard fending off the trolls in here.
